Jim Herbert is a long time resident of Santa Cruz, and a retired auto collision repair shop owner. He now enjoys using his skills of working with metal to create art. He combines those metal working skills with his love for the ocean and surfing, and the result of blending these passions can be seen in his incredible sculptures. His surfers, paddle boarders, and other ocean related characters are all hand crafted out of all sorts of recycled metal. Jim's love of surfing, and the ocean is his inspiration.
"It's truly magical what the ocean can do for me. It's powerful, beautiful, and awesome. We are so fortunate to be part of it. You know you cannot conquer the ocean, but you'd like to try. You fear it, and love it at the same time."
Claire Herbert has lived most of her life in the San Jose area. She moved to Santa Cruz in 2010 after she and Jim were married. She has been teaching language arts to middle school students for over 30 years. In the growing collection of Jim’s metal surfers staring at her all throughout the house, she saw that they each had distinct personalities, and decided to write a children's book that would bring these characters to life in a fun and educational way.
Although she did the writing, Jim assisted her with the surf lingo, and in making sure the surfers were positioned correctly in the waves. Surfin’ the ABC’s is truly a joint effort that blends the authors’ passions of ocean, surfing, reading, and children.
