Focus: Relationships & Sexuality
Book choice: The Ethical Slut, Third Edition by Dossie Easton & Catherine A. Liszt
I’m Jocelyn, bookseller, magazine and IT coordinator, web person, and often behind Bookshop’s Instagram and Twitter. Seven years ago, in my early twenties and feeling stuck, and incidentally single, I picked up a book - The Ethical Slut by two queer women, Dossie Easton and Catherine A. Liszt. Ostensibly a guide to polyamory, this book immediately helped me be more honest and accepting towards my own sexuality and desires, and offered guidance towards making any relationship, monogamous or not, healthier and happier. Two years later my partner and I started a polyamorous relationship, something made possible by the tools and ideas this book had equipped us both with. Now, in our early thirties, we are still together, but figuring out the shape of our long-term relationship as we take on more of adult life. Luckily, I can now turn to the updated edition of Easton and Liszt’s book. As myself and my partner grapple with aging parents, housing, career goals, our relationships with others and our relationship with each other, I am excited to return to this book and re-discover myself and my desires, and work with my partner as we both figure out what our lasting relationship is going to look like as we both continue to grow up.
Mid-month Check-in: The update of this book is everything I remember and more. It's been a great conversation starter both with my partner and others. It's full of great ideas on communication and boundary recommendations.
