Book choice: Every Body Yoga by Jessamyn Stanley
I chose to restart my yoga practice with Every Body Yoga because I appreciate Jessamyn Stanley’s no-BS approach. I first got into yoga when I lived in San Francisco – I’d been put off by the cultish studios and expensive outfits that seemed required in order to enroll in a class, until I found a donation-based studio in the Mission that overlooked the entire city. The best thing about my old studio was the instructors, who always stressed the same things Jessamyn stresses in her book: yoga is for everyone, you don’t have to compare yourself to anyone around you, and you don’t even need money to do it. It’s been a few years since I had a steady yoga practice, and the thought of undertaking it again is a little intimidating. Every Body Yoga is going to be a great tool for me, because it will help me remember that I can do yoga without judging myself if my heels don’t touch the ground the first time I go into downward facing dog. Eventually they might, but if they never do, that’s okay too – I’m doing yoga, and that’s the whole point.
Mid-month Check-in: This book has been so easy to love. Reading Jessamyn's no-nonsense, no-excuse approach is really inspring me to start somewhere...anywhere! I have yet to find a class that fits my schedule, but I'm working on it!
Don't miss our event with Jessamyn Stanley on Sunday, August 12th, at 7:00.
