Bookshop Santa Cruz is delighted to welcome spirits expert Thad Vogler, creator of San Francisco's Bar Agricole and Trou Normand, for a special offsite event at Venus Spirits. Vogler will join us to read and sign copies of his terrific book, By the Smoke & the Smell: My Search for the Rare & Sublime on the Spirits Trail, which is one of the recommended titles in Bookshop's Winter Reading Program.
Thad Vogler's commitment to craft spirits, heritage cocktails, and the art of thoughtful bartending find a match in Venus Spirits' dedication to producing the highest quality handcrafted spirits—including organic small-batch whiskey, gin, aquavit, and blue agave spirits. At Bookshop's event, you can hear Vogler discuss artisanal spirits while enjoying cocktails and tastes from Venus' menu, which will feature special prices and drinks.
In By the Smoke & the Smell, Vogler takes readers around the world, celebrating the vivid characters who produce hand-made spirits like rum, scotch, cognac, and mezcal. From the mountains of Mexico and the forbidden distilleries of Havana, to the wilds of Scotland and the pastoral corners of France and beyond, this adventure will change how you think about your drink.
THAD VOGLER grew up in Santa Cruz in an academic family, was a high school All American athlete and graduated from Yale University. Vogler has made a living as a bartender since 1988, and worked in such far-flung locales as Paris, Ireland, Tokyo, Guatemala, Cuba and Belize. For nearly two decades, he worked to design, open and manage the bars at more than ten top Bay Area venues before opening his restaurants Bar Agricole (2010), Trou Normand (2014), and the forthcoming Obispo (2017). Vogler traces spirits to their agricultural roots and stocks his restaurant bars exclusively with little-known, small-batch selections that possess a strong sense of history and place. He has worked with numerous world-famous restaurateurs including Alice Waters, Charles Phan, and Francis Ford Coppola.
This free event will take place at Venus Spirits, 427-A Swift Street, on Thursday, February 8th, 6:00-7:00 pm. (Please note: Beverages will be available for purchase.)
