SOLD OUT: Patti Smith

Tuesday, November 17, 2015 - 7:00pm

Legendary writer, performer, and visual artist Patti Smith, National Book Award-winning author of Just Kids, will discuss her new memoir, M Train, an unforgettable odyssey into her astonishing mind, told through the prism of cafes and haunts she has visited and worked in around the world. Tickets for this very special book talk and signing are on sale in the store, while supplies last.

M Train is a coffee-saturated odyssey into the mind of a renowned artist, told through the prism of the cafes and haunts she has worked in around the world. Smith has described the book as “a roadmap to my life.” The M Train stops at 18 different “stations” and takes us on a journey through mind, memory and spirit, and through Smith’s deepest literary obsessions. It begins in the tiny Greenwich Village café where Smith goes every morning for black coffee, ruminates on the world as it is and the world as it was, and writes in her notebook. We then travel, through prose that shifts fluidly between dreams and reality, past and present, across a landscape of creative aspirations and inspirations: from Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul in Mexico, to a meeting of an Arctic explorer’s society in Berlin; from the ramshackle seaside bungalow in New York’s Far Rockaway that Smith buys just before Hurricane Sandy hits, to the graves of Genet, Plath, Rimbaud, and Mishima. Woven throughout are reflections on the writer’s craft and on artistic creation, alongside signature memories including her life in Michigan with her husband, guitarist Fred Sonic Smith, whose untimely death was an irremediable loss.

This exquisitely-told memoir, augmented by stunning black-and-white Polaroids taken by Smith herself, is a meditation on endings and on beginnings: a poetic tour de force by one of the most brilliant multiplatform artists at work today. On the day Café ‘Ino closes in 2013, her picture is taken by a passing photographer. Smith describes this image as “the first and last picture at my corner table in Ino” and it’s now a sacred memento: “My table and chair from the Café ‘Ino. My portal to where.”

Braiding despair with hope and consolation, illustrated with her signature Polaroids, M Train is a meditation on travel, detective shows, literature, and coffee. It is a powerful, deeply moving book by one of the most remarkable multiplatform artists at work today.

PLEASE NOTE: Ms. Smith will ONLY be signing copies of M Train--no additional items of any kind (books, albums, memorabilia, etc.). Photographs are allowed from the signing line, but there will be no posed photos. Thank you!
