SOLD OUT: John Waters @ Del Mar Theatre

Tuesday, May 19, 2015 - 7:00pm

Sorry, this event has sold out.
At The Del Mar Theatre - In partnership with The Nickelodeon Theatres
Bookshop Santa Cruz welcomes the one-and-only John Waters, who will discuss his book, Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America (now in paperback). Laced with subversive humor and warm intelligence, Carsick is an unforgettable vacation with a wickedly funny companion—and a celebration of America’s weird, astonishing, and generous citizenry.
This cross-country hitchhiking adventure with legendary indie film director John Waters is as delightful, shocking, eccentric, and hilarious as you’d expect. In the spirit of spontaneity, the Pope of Trash set out across America armed with his signature wit and pencil mustache—and a cardboard sign reading "I'm Not Psycho." Melding factual and fantasized versions of his hitchhiking experiences, Waters recounts (and imagines) his journey from Baltimore to San Francisco—riding with indie bandmates, a young Republic in a Corvette, and a well-mannered farmer unaware and unbelieving of Water’s identity. His journey quickly went viral when his pick-ups began tweeting that they’d bumped into the renowned filmmaker. Beyond narrating the actual events, Waters hilariously invents the best and worst possible hitchhiking scenarios, imagining a friendly drug dealer handing over piles of cash to finance films with no questions asked; a gun-toting drunk terrorizing and holding him hostage. With outlandish quirkiness and style that only Waters could achieve, Carsick is a joyride not for the faint of heart.
John Waters is a film director, screenwriter, actor, stand-up comedian, journalist, visual artist, and art collector, who rose to fame in the early 1970s for his transgressive cult films. He grew up in Baltimore, where he still lives, and has been making movies since he was seventeen. His films include Pink Flamingos, Mondo Trasho, Multiple Maniacs, Female Trouble, Desperate Living, Polyester, Hairspray, Cry Baby, Serial Mom, Pecker and Cecil B. Demented. The musical adaptation of his film, Hairspray, won eight Tony awards on Broadway.
Join Bookshop Santa Cruz and the Nickelodeon Theaters in welcoming John Waters for a conversation and book signing.
