Good things come in threes! This year’s third annual Independent Bookstore Day celebrations at Bookshop Santa Cruz will feature even more exciting local partnerships and a huge variety of daylong celebrations that you don’t want to miss--replete with contests and prizes, flash mobs and family events, refreshments (thanks to Verve and Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing), and a new Coloring Book Happy Hour. Launched in California in 2014, this celebration of Independent Bookstores has since expanded nationwide and is one of our most anticipated events. Join us all day long for exclusive items, laughter, and a festival of literary proportions!
9:00 a.m.: Share a perfectly smooth cup of coffee with us, courtesy of Verve Coffee Roasters, to launch this year’s exclusive Independent Bookstore Day Merchandise. Contributed by authors and artists worldwide exclusively for Independent Bookstore Day, these limited-edition products are only available for one day. In previous years, many exclusive items have sold out in the first hour! The 2016 batch of treasures includes a Neil Gaiman coloring book, an illustrated guide to making the perfect burger by Anthony Bourdain, even a how-to-draw book featuring Children’s characters like Curious George.
10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.: Santa Cruz Shakespeare presents a family-focused pairing of fun and activities. From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., join Santa Cruz Shakespeare in learning about and creating your own costume design with collage and fabric. Then practice your Shakespearean insults from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.! Special bonus: Buy any Shakespeare related books between 10 and 1 on this day and Bookshop will donate a portion of the proceeds to help build the new Santa Cruz Shakespeare theater in The Grove.
2:00 p.m.: Walt Whitman Flash Mob: On the final day of National Poetry month and in honor of Bookshop Santa Cruz's 50th Anniversary we invite you to participate in a Flash Mob style reading of 'Facing West from California’s Shores' by our literary mascot, Walt Whitman. Join us at 2pm sharp, in the skylight room or near vicinity. Bring your own copy of the poem or pick up a copy before the event at the information desk. When you hear the poem's title announced over the intercom, help us give (a somewhat chaotic) voice to this beloved ode.
2:30-4:30 p.m.: Join us for a pop-up museum lead by the incredible teens of the Museum of Art & History’s teen collaborative, Subjects to Change. They are asking the question: "What does independence mean to you?" Come participate in S2C's pop-up museum on independence by bringing an object that reflects your idea of independence (ie, a notebook, a poem, any object of significance) or by writing about what independence means to you. (all items will be returned)
5:00-6:00 p.m.: Coloring Book Happy Hour lets you play with colored pencils, markers, and crayons to wind down the day and features samples from popular Adult & Children’s coloring books, and delicious refreshments. All attendees can enter a raffle for a coloring book prize package provided by Sterling Publishers and Bookshop Santa Cruz.
7:00-8:00 p.m.: Bookshop’s third annual Literary Trivia Night with refreshments sponsored by Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing and hosted by local Trivia Master Thomas Todd. Form a team of 2-6 players, use your literary knowledge—and your English degree finally!—and win swag. To register e-mail email@example.com with a team name and number of players on your team. Advanced registration suggested but not required.
All Day Fun:
