On July 11th, Bookshop Santa Cruz will unveil its newly-installed Espresso Book Machine® (EBM), a Xerox Solution- cutting-edge technology that offers patrons instant access to more than eight million titles printed in any language, and allows area authors to self-publish their work on-site. Bookshop Santa Cruz is one of the first Independent book stores in California to install the machine and one of only 12 independent bookstores in the United States to do so.
Customers will now have access to millions of titles in any language with the Espresso Book Machine, the only digital-to-print at retail solution on the market. With the push of a button, any book from EspressNet®, On Demand Books’ digital catalog of content, can be printed, bound and trimmed in minutes; creating a paperback book that is virtually indistinguishable from the publisher’s version (watch the EBM in action here).
The Espresso Book Machine also allows area writers to self-publish their work, with the added benefit of offering their books for sale on the EBM’s catalog, making them available at EBM locations around the world. Using the EBM’s SelfEspress® software, writers can format, design, and upload their book for printing into a physical book within minutes.
In celebration of the Espresso Book Machine, Bookshop will be holding a launch party with a discussion-panel focusing on self-publishing. Santa Cruz journalist (Sentinel writer, and past feature editor for the GoodTimes) Christa Martin will be on hand to discuss and answer questions about the best way to approach press and get their interest in your book—even reviewing it. Nici McCown, our consignment specialist at Bookshop, will use her book-seller’s perspective to discuss and answer questions of recommended ways to approach bookstores about carrying your book as well as additionally covering tips of how to use social media to spread the word about your new title.
And of course, we’ll see the star of the evening, the Espresso Book Machine itself, in action. There will be a demonstration of printing various titles, seeing the self-publishing software, and added bonuses like giving away EBM gift cards, offering discounts off printing costs and consulting appointments, and even launching a name that Book Machine contest.
