Community Read: The Essex Serpent
At New Bohemia Brewing Co.
1030 41st Avenue, Santa Cruz
Event #5 of Bookshop’s 2017 Books & Brews Passport Series
Join us for our second collaboration with the artists and craft brewing experts of New Bohemia on 41st Avenue! Our community read book group title this summer is The Essex Serpent, a staff-favorite by award winning English novelist Sarah Perry. Perry’s American debut is atmospheric, intellectual, and a perfect read for book groups; she explores mythical horror alongside the value of human relationships, independence, skepticism, faith and love, earning comparisons to greats such as Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, Charles Dickens and Hilary Mantel. Pick up a copy at anytime throughout the summer and come discuss a beautiful book in a beautiful space with friends, booze, and pub food aplenty at this season’s closing event.
Bring your own group, or come prepared to mix it up! We’ll link you up with a discussion group at New Bohemia, and provide you with discussion questions… just bring your intellectual (and actual) thirst, and we’ll do the rest!
Special Offer: Our friends at NuBo are generously offering 50% off of the first beer for any guest with a copy of the community read book purchased through Bookshop Santa Cruz (so hold on to your receipt)! Thank you, NuBo!
This event is free and open to attend to anyone over the age of 21.
"A novel of almost insolent ambition--lush and fantastical, a wild Eden behind a garden gate...it's part ghost story and part natural history lesson, part romance and part feminist parable. I found it so transporting that 48 hours after completing it, I was still resentful to be back home." -New York Times
