The Humanities Institute at UC Santa Cruz presents their 2022 Deep Read: Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi
Bookshop Santa Cruz is pleased to be a community partner for The Deep Read, an annual program of The Humanities Institute at UC Santa Cruz, who invite curious minds to think deeply about books and the most pressing issues of our day. This year's read is Yaa Gyasi’s novel Transcendent Kingdom, which explores the conditions of cultural assimilation for immigrants to the United States, religious faith vs. scientific inquiry, and the experience of first-generation students in higher education. It’s a fantastic and moving book about a Ph.D. student in Neuroscience who is grappling with the impact of both addiction and mental illness on her family and the difficulty of being a first-generation scientist of color.
