A Compendium of Collective Nouns by Woop Studios

I have always loved collective nouns, and I am so happy that this book exists. Give it to the grammar geek in your life or to the poet who gets words stuck in her head like songs. Or give it to yourself and enjoy more than 2000 collective nouns (some delightfully obscure, like an ooze of amoebas) alongside lush and thrilling illustrations. You’ll be the highlight of every cocktail party.

What Poets Are Like by Gary Soto

Gary Soto is the author of children’s books, young adult fiction, and numerous collections of poetry—and is often referred to as one of the nation's first Chicano poets. In What Poets are Like, Soto captures episodes of a writer’s inner and public life. From rejection letters, to craving only the dog’s company, to the acclaim (or lack-there-of) that comes with writing poetry, Soto’s deep wit and self-deprecating sense of story-telling opens up toward surprising reflection and appreciation of a writer’s life. I loved this book for its unapologetic honesty and insight; here’s to irreverence at its best.

Good Prose by Tracy Kidder

Tracy Kidder and Richard Todd have been partners—writer and editor—for about 40 years. This strong partnership is part of what makes Good Prose not only a valuable resource for writers of sort, but in itself almost a personable, surrogate teacher: two men, one book, one shared lifetime of writing, editing, and publishing experience. For writers and readers, to understand what and why you write, and appreciate the wonderful prose you read.

The Elements of Style by Strunk & White, illustrated by Maira Kalman

Even though some of these rules are largely ignored in modern American English, this is a valuable guide to avoiding common mistakes. It covers the basics - "your tool" / "you're a tool!" - before moving on to more general refinements of style. My favorite bit of advice: "Do not dress words up by adding -ly to them, as though putting a hat on a horse."
