Science Fiction/Fantasy

YOU by Austin Grossman

Are you a nerd? The kind of person who has stayed up all hours to finish a video game, who engages in passionate debates about fantasy versus sci-fi, and who feels like no one really understands expect the people who play those games with you? Then this is your book. It’s a coming of age story for the video game designer, the D&D player, & the comic book collector.

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie

I honestly can’t remember the last time a sci-fi book really engaged me intellectually AND gave me great, blowing-giant-ships-up-in-space action. I especially love the AI who is the main character, who reminds me of how sometimes in sci-fi it’s the non-humans teach us best how to be human. If you ever loved Asimov, Herbert or Battlestar Galactica then you’ll love Leckie.

Deathless by Catherynne Valente

Whenever I tell people I love fairy tales, I can almost see how childish this makes me in their eyes. Fairy tales are so boring, they say, just simplistic love stories. I pity these people, because they just don’t understand. Valente though, she gets it, she understands. She effortlessly combines the magic of Spirited Away, the grit of City of Thieves, with a huge helping of Russian folklore & history.

Redshirts by John Scalzi

Scalzi does it again in this Hugo award winning novel! Ensign Dahl notices something odd about the starship Intrepid: the away missions have a surprisingly high mortality rate. His search for the truth leads his crew on a quest through time, space and literal plot holes. Hilarious and fun with a surprising amount of heart, this is great for fans of Star Trek or anyone who likes sci-fi.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

There are memories that everyone has from their childhood that feel so real but are too fantastic to be fact. Except sometimes, they are real. Gaiman perfectly captures that sense of danger and wonder that are so inherent to childhood, while adding his trademark folk/fairy tale twist. Dreamlike, beautiful and evocative, this makes a wonderful gift for newbies and fans of Gaiman alike!

The Golem & the Jinni by Helene Wecker

It begins in 1918 New York as two mythical creatures, a golem and a jinni, awaken to find themselves rather out of place. This is both a lovely, detailed work of historical fiction, and a complex tale of self-discovery and friendship, redemption and revenge, and, of course, magic – both the fantastic and the everyday. A truly lovely, utterly satisfying novel.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

I'm not much of a science-fiction-fantasy fan, so when I picked up this book at the recommendation of several of my co-workers, I wasn't sure what I was going to think of it. It ended up being one of the best narrated and plotted books I have ever read. The Name of the Wind had me gushing for weeks about the well-constructed characters and the aptitude of the writing.

Biting the Sun by Tanith Lee

Imagine a world where death is temporary, marriage is a game to be played for a few days, and appearances and gender are as transient as your clothes. Tanith Lee paints this world in vivid and detailed prose that also realistically captures a youth society with unique slang and relationships. Ultimately, the novel is a search for the answer to a very important question: what really matters?

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

It’s been 36 years since Stephen King published The Shining, and now we finally get to see what happened to little psychic Danny Torrance. Danny has since grown up and moved to New England to escape what happened between his father and the Overlook Hotel... and we all know that when King writes in New England, things get otherworldly. Suffice to say that a prescient cat, immortal predators, and the ongoing battle of good vs. evil are involved.
