Invisible Murder by Lene Kaaberbøl & Agnete Friis

Kaaberbøl and Friis blew us away with their riveting debut, The Boy in the Suitcase, and now they’re back with their second Nordic mystery featuring Red Cross nurse Nina Borg. Invisible Murder is just as suspenseful, well-written, and fantastic as their first book, and, as with their debut, weaves social commentary into a taut tale. “This assured thriller cements its authors’ places near the top of the Scandinavian crime fiction pantheon.” -Library Journal, starred review

The Redeemer by Jo Nesbø

This is the fourth book in in Norwegian Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole series to be translated to English (it actually precedes The Snowman), and it’s one of his best. This highly suspenseful page-turner involves a sinister plot involving the Salvation Army during the Oslo Christmas season. “The Redeemer rocks!

Jo Nesbø is my new favorite thriller writer and Harry Hole my new hero. This

book had my pulse in the red zone from start to finish.” —Michael Connelly

The Black Box by Michael Connelly

In a case that spans 20 years, LAPD Detective Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved.

“Another superb, ambitious murder mystery from one of the best writers in the business, featuring perhaps the best fictional detective in crime fiction.” —Toronto Globe and Mail

The Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye

I adored The Gods of Gotham both for the riveting mystery and the evocative depiction of New York in 1845. Salty and enthralling with plenty of historical details, believable characters, and twisted plot lines this is a great book for transporting you to another time and place and enticing you to stay there.

In Winspear’s lastest, the indomitable Maisie Dobbs tackles a case close to her heart. After a childhood friend dies, Maisie delves into the mystery of whether the simple horse whisperer was murdered, and finds herself brushing against the some of the highest political powers. Strong-willed, intelligent Maisie is a wonderful heroine, and Winspear’s attention to historical detail gives an extraordinary sense of time and place. An excellent addition to a fantastic series.

Invisible Murder by Lene Kaaberbol & Agnette Friss

I am not someone who usually reads mysteries, but when I read the best-selling The Boy in the Suitcase last year by this talented Danish duo, I was hooked, and their second book, Invisible Murder, proves to be equally captivating. Following an interweaving tale of two poor boys who stumble across something that will ultimately threaten to blow apart the lives of many people, the chain of events that build this mystery had me suspended in delicious “sign of a great mystery” page-turning anxiety. With great character development, a dab of social commentary, and plenty of plot intrigue added in, this is one of those mysteries that you’ll find yourself wanting to steal back from the person you gift it to.

Broken Harbor by Tana French

This is French’s fourth mystery, and it’s her most sagacious and political book yet. Wrapped up alongside a genuinely terrifying mystery are issues of economic upheaval and mental health, and how to care for those who might seem beyond help. French’s writing is, as always, lushly atmospheric and addictive as all get out. This was my favorite mystery of the year.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

This book was, for me, the pure definition of a page turner. Yet the eternal dilemma of the bookseller still remains: I cannot really tell you what was so wonderful without giving away all the good parts. Therein lies the rub. I can say: I loved the journal-entry style narration, how my loyalties were constantly changing, and the scary plausibility of it all.

Phantom by Jo Nesbø

Nesbø returns with another explosive mystery starring the tortured, aging former detective Harry Hole, who probably would have gotten along well with Sherlock Holmes. Hole thought he’d escaped his troubles when he fled to Hong Kong, but soon finds himself pulled back to Sweden after the boy he helped raise is accused of murder. This is a great installment in the series, delving into an Oslo drug ring and Harry’s own troubled past.
