Mystery and True Crime

A Delicate Truth

The master of espionage returns with a thrilling tale of dirty tricks in the war on terror. In 2008, a counterterrorist operation aimed at the capture of a jihadist arms buyer takes place on the British crown colony of Gibraltar. It’s a joint operation involving a British foreign office minister, an American CIA operative, and a private defense contractor. It goes off without a hitch. Or does it? “Le Carré further establishes himself as a master of a new, shockingly realistic kind of noir in which right-thinking individuals who challenge the institutional order of things always lose.” —Booklist, starred review

Invisible City

When a Hasidic Jewish woman is found murdered in Brooklyn, young journalist Rebekah finds herself drawn into the case and the secretive community, the same community Rebekah’s absentee mother belonged to. As Rebekah races to catch a killer, she finds herself discovering truths about her mother and herself. Invisible City is a strong debut novel with an unpredictable mystery and a realistically flawed, sympathetic heroine, and I can’t wait to see what Dahl does next.

Gone Girl

Even if you haven’t read this book, you’ve still probably heard about it. Gone Girl is one of those much-hyped books that really lives up to the buzz. What I loved most was how often I thought I knew what was coming, and how completely wrong I turned out to be. If you’re going anywhere this summer, take Gone Girl with you—it will get you through the worst airport delays and the longest road trips imaginable.

The Stranger

Not one but two Camilla Läckberg releases this summer? (The Hidden Child is brand new in hardcover and The Stranger is now in paperback.) My nerves can’t take it. Her creepy Scandinavian crime writing is incredibly suspenseful and atmospheric and her knack for portraying everyday evil is quite disturbing. I recommend reading these with the lights on.

Visitation Street by

I fell right into this gripping, empathic crime novel, and I didn't come back up until I finished it. Visitation Street is the story of a young girl who goes missing after a night of adolescent adventures, and the complex effects of her loss on the diverse neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn. It is the characters who really shine in this novel--I couldn't stop thinking about them for weeks.

Hidden River by Adrian McKinty

Adrian McKinty writes gripping and intelligent page-turners that take place all over the world. The protagonist of Hidden River is a former drug detective from Ireland who is addicted to heroin and on the run from his past. He travels to Denver, Colorado to crack the unsolved murder of a childhood sweetheart, and makes more than one dangerous enemy. I just loved this one.

A Dark Redemption by Stav Sherez

If you’re anything like me and really into off-kilter police procedurals, then you need to check out the World Noir series by Europa. A Dark Redemption was my introduction to the series, and it’s a gem. Set in London and Uganda, this well-paced mystery centers around the gruesome murder of a student who delved too far into shadowy political secrets for her thesis.

Visitation Street by Ivy Pochoda

This is one of the best crime novels I’ve read this year. It’s more literary noir than thriller, with characters you can see and hear so clearly you might start confusing them with people you actually know. Though the plot centers on the disappearance of a young girl, the real focus of the book is the neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn, and the various down-and-out souls who live there

Dark Times in the City by Gene Kerrigan

An ordinary man gets caught up in a tempestuous whirlwind of gangland violence. Blackmailed into participating in the planning of an epic retribution and saddled with his own dark past, Danny Callaghan has few options and fewer allies. The novel’s dismal portrayal of Dublin’s underbelly is paired with fast-paced criminal plotting to create a cathartic voyage through blood-soaked streets.
