The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman

The first book in Pullman’s complex, mind opening, and gripping His Dark Materials trilogy, The Golden Compass introduces Lyra, a headstrong and incredibly brave girl whose life is about to be changed forever, and who will, eventually, change the world. Deftly weaving religion, physics, and fantasy, this is an exceptional feat of storytelling, and one of my all-time favorites.

Even with familiar characters such as Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins, this illustrated edition is anything but ordinary—Lawrence’s beautiful woodcuts make reading this book a family bedtime treasure the entire year through. Shark Girl by Kelly Bingham

Fifteen-year-old Jane Arrowood enjoyed a normal day at the beach with her mom when the unthinkable happened: She lost her arm to a shark attack, quickly becoming “that shark girl” to all her friends. When Jane takes her challenge head on, she learns not only how to be comfortable in her own skin but how to harness that strength to dominate in women’s surfing. “The drama of the shark attack will hook them, and Jane’s inner journey will hold them until the end,” says School Library Journal in a starred review.
