Stefanie has been the cookbook buyer at Bookshop Santa Cruz for over 25 years and credits her love of good food (and good times) to being born in New Orleans. Her favorite thing in the world is to cook for family and friends.

Feed the Resistance by Julia Turshen

In the wake of the election, Julia Turshen (author of the excellent Small Victories cookbook) felt an urgent call to activism. Transforming from a sometimes-activist to a fully committed member of the resistance, she found her role in the form of feeding people. Feed the Resistance is a fantastic collection of inspirational essays and nurturing recipes by Turshen and a broad range of activists. From “Easy Meals for Folks Who Are Too Busy Resisting to Cook” to “Feeding the Masses” to “Baked Goods + Portable Snacks,” this outstanding book is perfect for those who value community, solidarity, and the power of food. All proceeds go to the ACLU. - S.B.

Can’t get a reservation at the Michelin-starred San Francisco restaurant State Bird Provisions? Here’s the next best thing. In their brand new cookbook, Brioza and Krasinsky share recipes for the innovative small dishes they serve (on dim sum–style carts) at their restaurant, including their signature fried quail and stellar savory pancakes. Even if you never attempt the recipes, just reading about their exciting food will likely inspire you in the kitchen. - S.B.

Cherry Bombe: The Cookbook by Kerry Diamond & Claudia Wu

I’m always excited to see a new issue of Cherry Bombe, the magazine that celebrates women and food, on the stands. Cherry Bombe skillfully blends fresh faces (Molly Yeh, Jessica Koslow) with culinary royalty (Leah Chase, Martha Stewart) to provide a beautifully designed, well-written look at women in the food world. Cherry Bombe’s cool new cookbook is as hard to resist as its magazine. It showcases awesome recipes from a wide range of cooks, including San Francisco’s Elizabeth Prueitt (Tartine) and Oakland’s Tanya Holland (Brown Sugar Kitchen). - S.B.

America: The Cookbook by Gabrielle Langholtz

More than 800 recipes are included in this celebration of the diversity of American food, organized state by state. Terrific contributors abound, including Jonathan Gold and Alice Waters, representing California; Edward Lee (Kentucky); Naomi Pomeroy (Oregon); and Michael Twitty (Virginia). The menus and chefs chosen to represent each state make this book endlessly interesting (and worthy of debate), and the bounty of iconic recipes—from Cobb Salad to Tortilla Soup to Cherry Pie—will make you feel grateful for the incredible range of food we call American. - S.B.

Autentico by Rolando Beramendi

In Autentico’s foreword, Ina Garten (The Barefoot Contessa), writes about Rolando Beramendi’s incredible enthusiasm for Italian food and for life. That joy and vibrancy certainly come through on every page of this beautiful book, which is equally a pleasure to read and cook from. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself, as I did, becoming more enamored with anchovies and olive oil than you ever thought possible. - S.B.

The New Bohemians Handbook by Justina Blakeney

Justina Blakeney’s colorful, comfortable, and free-spirited design style made her first book, The New Bohemians, a bestseller. Now Blakeney returns with a handbook that shows readers how to create that style for themselves. The best part about her design philosophy is that the most important elements have nothing to do with money; rather, Blakeney stresses clarity, color, plants, and natural materials to create a welcoming home that speaks to you and makes you (and your guests) happy the moment they walk in the door. I can’t get enough of her love of pattern, texture, tiles, and textiles—not to mention her joyous nature. “Home décor should be fun. If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.” - S.B.

Obama: An Intimate Portrait by Pete Souza

Pete Souza (former chief official White House photographer) took more than 2 million images of President Obama during Obama’s two terms, many of which became instant classics (including “The Situation Room” as the Bin Laden raid was happening). I have always loved how Souza’s images both personalized the president and captured the respect Obama had for the office and the seriousness with which he took his job. This new collection of photographs brings tears to my eyes not only for reasons of nostalgia (and the stark difference between Obama and the current resident in the White House), but because Souza captures the humanity of a man who bore so much weight on his shoulders. From the emotional moment the Obamas visited Nelson Mandela’s cell on Robben Island to the president’s reaction to a tiny Spiderman trick-or-treating at the White House, these are images to treasure. - S.B.

What Unites Us by Dan Rather & Elliot Kirschner

Dan Rather spent decades as a newsman and journalist and recently has found a new and unexpected following in social media. No longer bridled by impartiality but still dedicated to facts and exposing truths, he speaks with passion and emotion about the urgent matters of our time (of which there are so many). This collection of essays reminds us of the things that make our country great—from institutions like public libraries and national parks to the struggle for civil rights and the drive toward science and innovation—while also questioning what patriotism looks like. With his plainspoken and hopeful voice, Rather’s reflection on what it means to love America is perfect for readers of any age. - S.B.

The Book of Greens by Jenn Louis

Is there a category of vegetables more diverse than greens? From bitter to sweet, cooked to raw, there are greens for every palate and, best of all, varieties that are in season throughout the year. The Book of Greens features 40 types—from arugula to watercress—and provides seriously delicious recipes (as well as prep and storage solutions) for each. I love how Louis encourages home cooks to get creative with familiar and less-familiar greens by using flavors and techniques from around the world. - S.B.
