S.B.'s Reviews

Stefanie has been the cookbook buyer at Bookshop Santa Cruz for over 25 years and credits her love of good food (and good times) to being born in New Orleans. Her favorite thing in the world is to cook for family and friends.

Rich Table by Sarah & Evan Rich

It’s hard to score reservations at the Michelin-starred San Francisco restaurant that Eater says serves “wildly inventive and consistently delicious food,” but you can get favorite recipes from the first few years of Rich Table being open and read about the history of the restaurant in this warm and personal cookbook. Spanning salads, vegetables, meat and fish, pasta dishes, sweets, and drinks, this showcase of innovative food will inspire home cooks and professional chefs alike. - S.B.

Bestia by Ori Menashe, Genevieve Gergis, & Lesley Suter

Bestia is filled with recipes for the rustic Italian dishes—pasta, pizza, charcuterie, desserts, and more—that have Bestia patrons lining up around the block in LA. At the restaurant, they pack their food with flavor by doing a lot of prep work, which is evident in their cookbook. There is plenty in Bestia to challenge experienced cooks (say, smoking, dehydrating, and grinding anchovies) but there is also a wealth of recipes that home cooks can take on and be richly rewarded for. - S.B.

Sweet Home Café Cookbook by the National Museum of African American History and Culture

Visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture is way up on my bucket list, but until then I’ll be able to experience the food served at its acclaimed Sweet Home Café with this new cookbook. In addition to recipes, it includes notes by the great Jessica B. Harris (I’ll read anything she writes!), which put the food in historical context. “A heartwarming guided tour through African American culinary history that sparkles with all the fervor, dedication, and innovation of the Café itself.”—Michael W. Twitty, author of The Cooking Gene - S.B.

The German Cookbook by Alfons Schuhbeck & The Nordic Baking Book by Magnus Nilsson

Two new cookbooks from Phaidon Press happen to coincide with my ancestry, but you don’t need to be Nordic nor German to share my excitement. Both books are gorgeous and offer a comprehensive look at cuisines with rich traditions. In The Nordic Baking Book, acclaimed chef Magnus Nilsson (Fäviken) captures the Nordic love for baked goods with recipes for breads, pastries, cakes, cookies, and holiday treats. The German Cookbook features delicious recipes from the many regions of Germany, including some of my family’s favorites: Bratwurst, Beef Roulade, and Dresden-Style Christmas Stollen. Enjoy! - S.B.

An American Odyssey by Mary Schmidt Campbell

In An American Odyssey, Mary Schmidt Campbell, president of Spelman College, delves into the life of artist Romare Bearden, a muralist and collagist whose large-scale public works came to symbolize the black experience during the Civil Rights era. I have always loved Bearden’s work and am fascinated to learn more about his art and life, including his collaborations with choreographer Alvin Ailey and how being a social worker (for nearly three decades) impacted his work. - S.B.

Make Something Good Today by Erin & Ben Napier

Erin and Ben Napier have gained a huge following from their show, Home Town, remodeling houses in their small hometown of Laurel, Mississippi, but fans may not know that they worked hard to rebuild and strengthen their community long before they landed on HGTV. In Make Something Good Today, the Napiers share that story and their years-long commitment to using their carpentry and design skills to transform homes into personal spaces that are comfortable, beautiful, and bring joy and pride to the owners—which, in turn, has made their town prosper. The charm and ease of this creative couple, so evident on their show, come shining through on the pages of their book. - S.B.

Small Space Style by Whitney Leigh Morris

Whitney Morris is a firm believer that one doesn’t need to live large to live beautifully. She practices what she preaches in the tiny 362-foot home she shares with her husband, son, and two dogs in Venice Beach. On The Tiny Canal Cottage blog and in this book, Morris shares her tips for living well in a small space. Refreshingly, she does not think that the answer lies entirely in clever storage solutions, but rather in not having more stuff than you need. She also has smart advice about sticking to a color palette (even with dog toys!) so that when things are strewn about, they don’t look out of place. Small Space Style will help you create a home you’ll love, no matter the size. - S.B.
