Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl

One of my favorite books of all time and a frequent occupant of my handbag. In the first of her three memoirs, Ruth Reichl documents her ten years as the food critic for the New York Times. Her scathing wit and hilariously insightful anecdotes about visiting restaurants under various disguises are paralleled only by her tender, luscious, and genuinely passionate descriptions of food.

Dr Tatiana’s Sex Advice to All Creation by Olivia Judson

Follow this make-believe sex advice columnist as she answer’s questions like:
“I’m a stick insect and I’m embarrassed to say I’m writing to you while
copulating, as my mate and I have been at it for ten weeks. When will this
madness end?” In the guise of sassy responses, Olivia Judson teaches us about
the nitty- gritty bizarre sexual habits of a variety of creatures, and their
purposes.

Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat

Originally described to me as the book that birthed modern conservationism, this true account of Mowat’s time living amongst arctic wolves in northern Canada reads as much like a novel as it does a field guide. Sent by the Canadian government as part of their attempts to eradicate the wolf population, Mowat discovers through his cohabitation that it’s not the wolves that are dangerous.
