The Poet’s Dog by Patricia MacLachlan

This story from Newbery Medal–winning author Patricia MacLachlan starts simply enough: “I found the boy at dusk.” But with the next spare words, we are immersed in a forceful snowstorm that brings the speaker—a dog named Teddy—into the lives of two children just at the moment when everyone needs a little saving. Beside a cozy fire, the three weave together their stories while whipping up some creative suppers from provisions on hand. The seemingly disparate threads weave together as the blizzard takes its course, taking us through poetry lessons past and present. Maybe only children and poets can hear the dog speak, but aren’t we all children and poets at heart? Grades 3 & up.  —MICHELLE

The Octopus Scientists by Sy Montgomery

Don your snorkel and swim alongside a half-dozen scientists as they search for octopuses in the coral reefs of Moorea, a small island just northeast of Tahiti in the South Pacific. In this latest addition to the Scientists in the Field series, author Sy Montgomery vividly describes the day-to-day work of this octopus team, from their vexing search for these very sneaky creatures to the personality tests they administer to each octopus they find. The chronicle of this snorkeling adventure is punctuated with details of the alien-like physiology of the octopus—with its brain wrapped around its throat and more than half its nerve cells in its arms—as well as the author’s very personal connection to Athena, an octopus who lived at the New England Aquarium in Boston. Captivating underwater photographs propel you to keep turning the pages in this marvel of a read-aloud for curious children and adults alike.  —Michelle

Bramble and Maggie by Jessie Haas

Maggie has been cautioned not to fall for the first horse she sees. Bramble (a horse) is fed up with giving riding lessons and bored with walking very slowly in a circle. She needs a change of pace. Maggie sees the “Horse for Free” sign while out driving with her mom and dad and, even though Bramble “has her little ways,” Maggie does fall in love. Maggie and Bramble take challenges in stride as they grow to understand each other a bit more each day. Lively watercolor illustrations accompany each short chapter in this inviting easy-reader series. Grades K–2.  --Michelle
