Skunk & Badger by Amy Timberlake, Illustrated by Jon Klassen

Badger’s Important Rock Work must take a backseat when Skunk knocks on the door of his brownstone. Yet Skunk is much more than an unwelcome distraction, and by morning has served up the first of many antidotes to Badger’s solitary grumpiness. Odd-couple stories! It’s so easy to identify with the traits of one while yearning to be more like the other. Klassen’s earthy illustrations supply the details in this frolicking tale to read aloud or together, with more adventures to come. -Michelle

If You Want to See a Whale by Julie Fogliano, Illustrated by Erin Stead

Just like many things that are really worthwhile, seeing a whale takes an ocean view, lots of patience, and “a not-too-comfy chair… because sleeping eyes can’t watch for whales and whales won’t wait for watching.” In a world full of distractions, these pages lay out a few simple rules for staying focused on the important things. Erin Stead’s intricate pencil and color drawings are cozy and detailed all the way through, but the finale is really something.

The colors in this book just knock my socks off! Every page exudes such joy, from the smiling veggies to the wonderfully wacky wordplay. What a sweet way to wind down with a little one at the end of the day, “for nothing’s more exhausting than growing day and night.” -Michelle

Walter Had a Best Friend Written by Deborah Underwood

Yes, I’m sure you noticed the title’s past tense. And honestly, you and I know that some friends come into our lives for a short—but nonetheless important—time and then they leave. But if you’re a kid, you might think you’re the first one ever in the whole world to lose a friend. That’s why I love this quiet book. It whispers that it’ll be okay. One morning soon, a beautiful day will bring the whiff of adventure. Heartfelt and hopeful, for kids and their parents.

Wildoak by C. C. Harrington

C. C. Harrington’s debut novel tells the story of Maggie, a girl with great empathy and a stutter, and a snow leopard named Rumpus, who each find themselves out of place in 1960s England. Told in alternating chapters, Maggie and Rumpus individually grapple with an uncertain future. When their worlds collide, they beautifully manage to find their way through together. An insightful tale of unconditional love, for fans (like me) of Sara Pennypacker’s Pax and Lauren Wolk’s Echo Mountain.

The Sea in the Way by Sophie Gilmore

Badger and Bear are the best of friends despite being separated by time zones, sputtering phone lines, and THE SEA. When the sea asks for more and more and then one thing too many, Badger finally sees that what divides the two friends also joins them together. Awash in ocean colors from edge to edge, these lovely pages beckon us to truly understand the distance between one another. A very thoughtful story for kids and parents alike. —Michelle

The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate

Bob (“Robert” when he’s getting on Julia’s nerves, “Uncle Bob” to baby elephant Ruby) is the stray pup from Applegate’s Newbery Medal–winning The One and Only Ivan, whose outsized personality demanded its own story. Through Bob’s eyes, we experience the deep connections in families of origin and families of choice, against the backdrop of a chaotic storm that challenges people and animals alike. Written in short, punchy, cleverly named chapters, this story will delight, even if you haven’t read the first book.  —Michelle

Don’t Worry, Murray by David Ezra Stein

As a worrier myself, I very much appreciate Murray’s unflinching look at what exactly he’s afraid of. Once he names his fears, he implements practical solutions to address each one, and even finds that he can handle the unexpected. Near this story’s end, the narrator exclaims “I’m proud of you…my brave dog.” But in Murray’s final dream bubble, we see that Murray is also proud of himself. The vibrant, expressive illustrations of David Ezra Stein (of Interrupting Chicken fame) do not disappoint.  —Michelle

Every Dog in the Neighborhood Written by Philip C. Stead

Louis and his grandma live in a world, a community, where you take responsibility—Grandma for an abandoned lot and Louie for a survey of dogs. Louie gets to make his own rules on this self-assigned project, counting dogs in houses, on walks, and in hearts. Cordell teases out every frustrated, gleeful, drooling expression with his illustrations, while Stead’s words get to the heart of the matter. A new picture book about dogs? Count me in every time.  —Michelle
