The North Wind & the Sun by Phillip Stead

After a brief preamble about seasons, we are introduced to three sisters wearing patchwork coats who sense a new but familiar chill in the air. Soon the North Wind whips up, and they huddle together even as the gale forces strain at their coat seams. Cue the Sun, strong in its own way, spreading its warmth as flowers bloom and coats are mended. Philip Stead’s heartwarming illustrations invite us to look again at this classic fable.

The Real Story By Sergio Ruzzier

In Sergio Ruzzier’s picture book world, the familiar pastel-colored critters are thoughtful, quirky, and hilarious. Here we get not one but several plausible (you be the judge) versions of the age-old question, “What happened to the cookies?” Awash from edge to edge in pen, ink, and watercolors, each page brings us closer to the truth: It’s the story, silly! A reminder to kids of all ages of the importance of storytelling.

Dogtown by Katherine Applegate & Gennifer Choldenko

Katherine Applegate (The One and Only Ivan) and Gennifer Choldenko (the Al Capone at Alcatraz series) have teamed up in this quirky illustrated series about life in and out of a dog shelter—not just any shelter, but the futuristic Dogtown for real and robot dogs. With hopes of reuniting with their families, two dogs, along with a very helpful mouse, escape through the front doors into the wintery world. Short chapters and Wallace West’s expressive drawings make this an addictive read for recent chapter book graduates.

Bunny & Tree by Balint Zsako

With each reading of this wordless story, I see more. First time through, I understood the barebones buddy road trip featuring a bunny with two different ear colors, an uprooted tree, and a red cart. But then! The expressiveness of the tree, the explosion of color, the intentions unlocked so many more details in Balint Zsako’s beautiful illustrations. Time spent with this lovely book is richly rewarded. For all ages.—Michelle

Zoey & Sassafras Book 1: Dragons and Marshmallows written by Asia Citro

A beautiful mash-up of science and fantasy! Zoey is a young girl who discovers she can see magical creatures (just like her mom), which turns out to be a useful skill because they are secretly running an urgent care in their backyard. Each book in this series features a different magical creature with a malady that needs attention (and some of these healed creatures make an appearance in later books so it's worth reading in sequence). Written by a science teacher, this series is a great introduction to the scientific method, with lots of magic thrown in for good measure. Really fun. — Michelle
