Where Are Your Boys Tonight? by Chris Payne

This is the perfect gift for anyone who bought—or wanted to buy—tickets to the When We Were Young music festival. As told by the people who were there, Where Are Your Boys Tonight documents the journey of emo from the basements of New Jersey to the biggest cities in America. You may think you knew; you have no idea. Put on your black eyeliner, try to remember your AIM screen name, and travel back in time.

Happy Place by Emily Henry

Six best friends. Three life-changing secrets. One unforgettable trip. Happy Place is greater than the sum of its tropes (fake relationship mixed with a dash of second chance). It is a moving exploration of relationships that left me with a cry-hangover. Emily Henry’s distinctive brand of banter sings and the chemistry sizzles. Her characters—fully realized and painfully, beautifully human—leap off the page. 2/5 chili peppers. 5/5 hearts.

King of Wrath by Ana Alexandria Huang

Mix the drama of Gossip Girl with the extravagance of Crazy Rich Asians and you’ll have King of Wrath. In the first in her latest series, Ana Huang dives headfirst into the lives of the rich and shameless. Arranged marriages, political backstabbing, and steamy scenes: This book is the ultimate escape. If I could only bring one book on vacation this summer, this would be it.

The Celebrants by Steven Rowley

Some friends from college slip away. Some friends band together and throw living funerals for one another. Primarily set in Big Sur, The Celebrants, a modern take on The Big Chill, has something for everyone. The prose is both poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, and the book is hauntingly beautiful and intensely immersive. I will be revisiting this novel—and these characters—for a long time. This was a 5-star read.

Bad Vibes Only by Nora McInerny

Fans of Nora McInerny’s podcast Terrible, Thanks For Asking will gobble up this hilarious and heartbreaking book. Her wry approach to wearying topics makes her candid discussion a breeze to read in a single sitting. She walks a balance between self-compassion and self-roasting that I yearn to achieve. Trigger warnings for discussions of death, disordered eating, and cancer, and reminders that Tumblr was a thing.

All That Is Wicked by Kate Winkler Dawson

All That Is Wicked is the perfect example of my ideal recipe for a true crime book. One-third I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, one-third Helter Skelter, and one-third Devil in the White City—I couldn’t put it down. I had never heard of the psychopathic and murderous Edward Rulloff, nor the proto-Mindhunters who attempted to understand him. This scintillating, spiraling, maddening journey had me transfixed from the very first page.

Partners in Crime by Alisha Rai

This book has everything you could want in a contemporary romance: Snappy dialogue between protagonists who actually have chemistry, a diamond heist in the City of Sin, an empathetic and endearing male lead, and a whip-smart female lead who bucks the TSTL (Too Stupid to Live) trope. Perfect for fans of Christina Lauren, Kristen Callihan, or Mia Sosa. Spice level: 3 chili peppers.

Love in the Time of Serial Killers by Alicia Thompson

Murderinos rejoice! This is THE romance novel for anyone who binges True Crime podcasts, Netflix series, Only Murders in The Building, and Ann Rule books. Thompson’s endless references to both obscure and well-known stories feel like an Easter Egg. It might be distracting if not so freakin’ well done. The characters are charming; the story is original, and it's an overall delightful reading experience. SSDGM
