Kimberly's Reviews

Though Kimberly may be a bookseller at heart, she is lucky enough to currently run the Gift Department at Bookshop Santa Cruz. Some of her favorite things include: unrubbed kitten tummies, iced coffee, pizza, hoarding yarn, and Settlers of Catan (or just CATAN, as its current incarnation is so boldly called). Ah, but books, you ask? She loves books with quirky narrators and unlikely love stories. She likes off-beat historical fictions, pretensiously literary sci-fi, and anything that has beautiful pictures with words like "low-sew," "pizza stone," and "from Imbibe Magazine."

You Need More Sleep by Francesco Marciuliano

From the bestselling author of I Could Pee on This comes a little book that will solve all your life problems. Key tips like "always stay 30 feet away from loved ones," or "indecision shows that you're thinking," will help you navigate the treacherous waters of love, work, and happiness. And remember: just because others don't see it, doesn't mean you shouldn't chase it!

Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style

I've been stenciling Lotta designs on my furniture and walls forever and have made dozens of Simple Sewing’s curtains over the years, so this book is a little like seeing the design of my home in clothing form. But the beauty of this collection lies not in the oh-so-Lotta printed fabrics but in the wonderful simplicity and range of the patterns. Straightforward looks, all modeled by Lotta and her close friends—real women with real lives who want real and accessible wardrobes. But fear not, beginners! The author is a self-professed sewing novice; this truly is a book for everyone. These timeless styles are easy to sew and universally flattering.  —Kimberly

Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde

Through a patina of darkly humorous wit, Fforde thumbs his nose at our own society’s obsession with class and race; his invented world of Chromatica is strictly divided by one’s ability to see a particular color. When Eddie Russet (a Red) is banished to East Carmine for a mandatory chair census, everything he knows is thrown into question...like why spoons are forbidden, the truth behind mystical High Saffron, and the possibility of falling in love with a Grey.  —Kimberly

The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larsen

Junior cartographer T.S. Spivet maps what he sees: translating the world as he knows into diagrams and detailed drawings. His (fully annotated) journey from Montana to the Smithsonian combines, as Stephen King puts it, “Mark Twain, Thomas Pynchon, and Little Miss Sunshine.” Like nothing else I’ve read before.

Cocktails for the Holidays by Lara Ferroni

The editors of Imbibe magazine have put together a fantastic collection of inventive toddies, crowd-pleasing punches, and cocktail flavor profiles right out of mom’s kitchen. Deliciously festive ingredients like cinnamon, cranberry, and apple cider interweave with more exotic (but wholly worthwhile) components like Chartreuse, Cherry Heering, and rose syrup. If you love the holidays (or love drinking your way through them), this cocktail guide was made for you.

The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells by Andrew Sean Greer

Greer captures an inherent melancholy that slips his characters forever into my heart. Greta Wells is no exception; after the devastating loss of her twin brother in 1985 she undergoes a medical treatment that inadvertently sends her back in time. She experiences two different, potential versions of herself (1918 & 1945) providing an interesting look at what it means to be happy and drawing a striking parallel between the Lost Generation and the U.S. AIDS epidemic.

Tequila Mockingbird by Tim Federle

Cocktails with a literary twist, you say? Sign. Me. Up. Not only is each recipe hilariously punny, it also features a fact filled blurb about the book itself as well as user friendly directions for a delicious cocktail. Check out Infinitely Zest (vodka & lemoncello), Romeo & Julep (bourbon, mint, & peach schnapps), or the Fahrenheit 151 (take a guess). Plus drinking games!
