Julia's Reviews

Julia is a 2011 Santa Cruz transplant (from the woods of Pennsylvania) and a yoga teacher who-- surprise!--was a Creative Writing and Film Theory major. She reads a lot of fiction and a little non-fiction, and just got into graphic novels, and can't read super scary mysteries because she's afraid of the dark. But she likes her fiction "kinda gritty," not fluffy. She's the Events Coordinator. Besides books, she likes bikes, gardens, and being active in every way possible; she would love to learn how to surf and is ashamed she hasn't yet.

Salt, Sweat, Tears by Adam Rackley

With no prior rowing experience, Adam Rackley decided to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a 7-meter-long wooden boat with one other person. It took them 76 days. If that’s not enough to make you want to read their story, this book combines Rackley’s first-person narrative with the intense history of trans-Atlantic rowers, beginning with two Norwegian fisherman in 1896—and many more, some of whom didn’t make it. Adventure, obsession, and survival at its best.

To Rise Again at a Decent Hour by Joshua Ferris

Joshua Ferris is certainly one of most talented writers of his generation. His newest novel is a stinging, hilarious story of an emotionally wounded Brooklyn dentist who realizes he’s being impersonated on Facebook and Twitter by an ancient religious tribe and starts to question everything he took for true. Bizarre, smart, and brilliant in style.

A Very Long Engagement by Sebastian Japrisot

Probably the most beautiful wartime romance ever written. Japrisot’s masterpiece is a brutal, enchanting dreamscape of World War I through the eyes of two wonderstruck young lovers. More than a love story, it wonders if love and the individual become insignificant in the upheaval of war. Beware that you’re likely to bawl your eyes out.

Already Dead by Denis Johnson

I re-read this book every year around Halloween: a “California Gothic,” eerie and tripped-out, imagined along the crag of The Lost Coast, through the haze of psychedelics, ghosts, and coastal fog. Murder, adultery, resurrection, outlaws, a witch, possible demonic possession—the main character even visits the Santa Cruz Boardwalk! Denis Johnson is a genius.

Shantaram by Gregory Roberts

If you’ve always thought, Oh, I’ve been meaning to read that!—don’t put it off any longer! At almost 1000 pages, I was never bored once. Based on the author’s life, it follows an escaped Australian convict as he weaves a new life in Bombay, from his makeshift hospital in the slums to the “glamor” of the drug- and gun-smuggling mafia. There’s also an intense, honest love story.

A Circus in Winter by Cathy Day

Set in a fictional town based on Day’s real Indiana home, the chapters melt together in a glittering, nostalgic portrait of the winter home of the Great Porter Circus between 1884 and 1939. Think Winesburg, Ohio plus Water for Elephants. It was a finalist for The Story Prize and was recently made into a musical at Ball State University.

The Dog by Joseph O’Neill

Fleeing recent heartbreak, a New York lawyer immigrates to Dubai to work as the “family officer” for his college friend’s tremendously rich family. In this bizarre desert wonderland, our scuba-enthusiast narrator navigates allegorical conflicts signature to modern life: obsession over the construction project next door; second-nature Googling and Facebooking; the memory of his not wanting kids as the cause of the traumatic breakup. A comically philosophical commentary on excessive wealth and technological development—maybe the ruin of morality and intellect. The Dog is constantly entertaining and hilariously smart.

Not Fade Away by Rebecca Alexander

Diagnosed young with a genetic condition that would gradually leave her deaf and blind, Rebecca Alexander refused to give up her life as an athlete, spin instructor, psychotherapist, puppy mom, or fun-loving New Yorker. Alexander’s inspiring story is raw and touching. She doesn’t over-dramatize what many of us would read as a sob story, but she doesn’t pretend to be a Pollyanna, either—she’s funny, quirky, and endearing

Of Sea and Cloud by Jon Keller

A gritty, atmospheric debut novel about family, revenge, and love, in foggy coastal Maine. Two brothers cope with the mysterious disappearance of their father and the legacy of the lobster fishing business he left behind. narrated through the eyes of even the most emotionally damaged and despicable characters. Phenomenally styled: bare and hard-hitting. I couldn’t put this one down.
