Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

Though Annihilation is a short piece, it was very easily one of the weirdest reading experiences I've ever had, and I loved it. Vandermeer doesn't fall into the sinkholes of tropes and predictable plot lines. I had no idea where the story would go and could barely put the book down to sleep. This is a perfect book to shake you out of a literary rut. - J

As You Wish by Cary Elwes

The Princess Bride is a very nearly perfect movie, As You Wish will make your millionth viewing even better. Elwes gives us a look at the great churning machine that is movie making. There's a bit about the filming of the Miracle Max scene that had me snorting my drink out my nose, I was laughing so hard. The entire book is worth that chapter. - J

VB6 by Mark Bittman

Mark Bittman’s simple concept of eating vegan before 6:00 p.m., coupled with eating fewer processed foods, showed real results for him when he lost 30 pounds. Scientific data and research help back up these personal results. Bittman also does an amazing job of putting the personal gains of weight loss and a healthier you into a larger perspective that includes a healthier earth as a result of a plant-based diet.

Plum by Makini Howell

Replicating french toast without animal products is extremely hard. I have been vegan for close to a decade and have yet to make anything I would call french toast. This is why I am so excited for the release of Makini Howell’s Plum Bistro cookbook. Sixty illustrated, animal-free recipes (including french toast!) offer vegans and nonvegans alike creative takes on old standbys.

Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey

Edward Abbey is a grumpy, offensive desert rat. It is this boldness and direct attitude that makes this book so good. His short, punchy prose is packed with both interesting facts about the Utah desert and his own brand of radical environmentalism, but it’s his vivid descriptions of the desert that make you want what any good nature book should make you want: to get outside!
