Invisible Kingdom written by G. Willow Wilson illust. by Christian Ward

I’ve been a fan of G. Willow Wilson since the first Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel comics came out. Wilson is now blasting off into space, creating a world reminiscent of Saga, with intrigue, political chess games, and daring escapes across the galaxy. Christian Ward’s art is full of candy-jar colors, bringing this space epic to vibrating life. This is perfect for the comic book fan who wants to get into stories outside of the superhero genre. - J Gallo

The Witches Are Coming by Lindy West

I’m so here for books written by women and queer folks that reveal the over-50, white, cis-het men behind the pop culture and politics curtain. We’ve existed in a world created by and for these men for too long, and West’s essays are a rallying cry to take up a sledgehammer and knock down those institutions. Don’t settle. Give this to your favorite feminist who needs a good laugh at everything awful that’s going on. - J Gallo

Shakespeare and the Folktale edited by Charlotte Artese

As both a Shakespeare and folklore nerd, this book was an absolute delight to me. Seeing the multicultural folktales that more than likely inspired the Bard to create his now universally known masterpieces is a unique experience. We can read the stories he heard and find the elements so familiar to us in ancient stories. This is perfect for the Santa Cruz Shakespeare member and budding thespian alike. - J Gallo

Threads of Life by Clare Hunter

Sewing, embroidery, and anything to do with needle and thread have long been considered “women’s work” and disregarded as frivolous. Clare Hunter takes us on a journey through time to shine a light on the enormous impact of these underestimated crafts—embroidery used as medieval propaganda, quilts that World War II POWs made to regain their individuality, the 1980’s AIDS quilt, pussy hats after the 2016 election. This trip through textile history is perfect for the history nerd and contemporary sewist alike. - J Gallo

Almost Lost Arts by Emily Freidenrich

This book is a piece of art in and of itself. It details the process of artisans who work on crafts that have almost slipped into obscurity. I jump at every chance I get to learn about a new form of crafting and making. The chapters on the book mender and the kintsugi (the Buddhist art of mending pottery with gold lacquer) are especially fascinating. Get this for the crafter in your life who flits from one practice to another and is equally excited about all of them. - J Gallo

Why We Quilt by THomas Knauer

I’m very excited to read the testimonials extolling the virtues of quilting in this book. I’ve been sewing for most of my life and quilting for at least the last 5 years, and I love hearing about how sewing and quilting have changed people’s lives and helped them to change the world around them. Each of the chapters speaks to me: I quilt to connect with tradition, I quilt and sew to eschew consumer culture, and I quilt because I can! Gift this to the fabric addict who handmakes their gifts every year. - J Gallo

Hawkeye V1: My Life as a Weapon by Matt Fraction and David Aja

As someone who also gets hurt a lot, wears a lot of purple, and struggles with depression, I relate to Clint Barton very strongly. He's a regular guy (as regular as an ex-circus performer and Avenger can be) who gets thrown into really ridiculous situations. His hare-brained solutions will keep you hooked from page one. - J Gallo

The Dark Lord Clementine by Sarah Jean Horwitz

Simply put, Clementine Morcerous is absolutely charming—not an adjective that would please a future Dark Lord, but after a couple chapters, you’ll agree. Clementine’s been groomed since birth to take her father’s place as Dark Lord, but when he falls under a curse, she must grapple with what’s expected of her versus what she really wants…and realizes that she might not want what’s expected of her. Great for fantasy fans who want something a little bit different. - J Gallo

War Girls by Tochi Onyebuchi

War Girls hits the ground running and doesn’t stop until the last page. Full of heart-pounding action and terrible, beautiful technology, Onyebuchi’s created an incredible future Nigeria that jumps off the page. The sister-bond between Onyii and Ify is a bright spark of love and hope in this unflinching look at the toll war takes on children and teens. Give this to fans of post-apocalyptic dystopias and Black Panther—these genius warriors with enormous hearts are prime candidates for the Dora Milaje. - J Gallo

A Cosmology of Monsters by Shaun Hamill

Strap in, kids, this one is a wild ride. With a slow-burn horror, Lovecraftian beginning, you won't be able to put this one down. Part family drama, part spine tingling spookiness, the Turner family and their woes will make any horror fan happy. Cosmology is perfect for anyone who has read through all of Stephen King’s back catalog and is itching for more. - J Gallo
