Dead Wake by Erik Larson

When the Lusitania sank near Ireland, it took 1,200 dead souls with it. The disaster pulled America into an already roiling World War I, shifting history's course in its wake. Dead Wake is masterfully crafted. Erik Larson’s pace and tone are akin to reading fiction. His lush backgrounds create the illusion of standing on the doomed deck or looking over Churchill's shoulder in Britain's secret intelligence building. He paints rich characters and, even knowing the outcome, keeps you in suspense until the bitter end.

The Plantagenets by Dan Jones

As a history nerd, I know way too much about the British monarchy and, more specifically, the Plantagenet dynasty, but even I was surprised by Dan Jones's book. The Plantagenets are a fascinating family which helped shape the European world extensively. If you think your family has problems, you've got nothing on the murders and betrayals of the Plantagenets.

The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore

Anyone who knows me knows I'm obsessed with comic books. However, I had no idea the depths of my lack of knowledge about Wonder Woman's true origins. This is not about Diana Prince's mystical creation, but rather about her creator and his motivations for bringing her into the world. Lepore's revelations will shock even the most seasoned comic book fans.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

I've come back to this book many times in my life and each time it's different. It's framed between the experiences of five different women in the Congo, a mother and her four daughters, and every time I've identified with someone new. Kingsolver's rich prose and unique voices will linger for a lifetime.

Ms. Marvel by G. Willow Wilson

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of the original Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers), but when someone new was set to take up the mantel, I was understandably nervous. Kamala Khan exceeded all expectations. She's funny, excitable, and every bit the awkward teenager you'd expect. You don't need to know the whole (or any of the) history to love Kamala and this volume.
