Star Wars, Volume 1 by Jason Aaron

Star Wars revolutionized science fiction, so it’s no wonder people continually return to its mythos. This Star Wars comic fills in missing scenes from the original trilogy. I loved dropping back in with Leia, Luke, and Han. They’re on a mission to cripple the Empire, but were not expecting to be in Darth Vader’s path long before Luke was ready to face him. The artwork and writing perfectly characterize our old friends, paying homage to the original stylizing with a modern sleekness.  --Ivy

Welcome to Night Vale by Joseph Fink & Jeffrey Cranor

Night Vale is a quiet town in the middle of the desert. It’s just like every other town. Every other town run by a Vague Yet Menacing Government Agency and librarians who are out to get you. Just like every other town except when it’s not. Fans of the podcast will recognize fun in-jokes, but there is plenty to enjoy even if you’ve never heard Night Vale. Darkly funny, a great read for lovers of Lovecraftian horror.  --Ivy

Atlas of Cursed Places by Olivier Le Carrer

As a history lover and a fan of the macabre, this book is incredibly exciting for me. It combines beautiful antique maps with the great disasters and mysteries of the human race. Places where the ground burns with fire constantly to those where bats black out the sky to the most popular suicide location in the world. This beautiful tome makes history so enticing.  —Ivy

Zero World by Jason Hough

Zero World is a super spy thriller with a major twist. Peter Caswell is an assassin with a distinct advantage. He can’t remember his missions after they’re completed, wiping his deeds from his conscience. That doesn’t mean the past can’t haunt him. When he finds himself sent through a hole in space to an alternate Earth, he must team up with a native, Melni, before his memory is automatically wiped and he’s stranded on an alien world.  --Ivy

The State of Play by Daniel Goldberg

The gaming world is very much in a state of crisis. No one can quite decide the best direction to take this burgeoning art form. Sixteen major players in the industry have some ideas. It was incredibly refreshing to read essays where no one treats the community like glass. We’re big kids, we can take some criticism. At its heart, this collection is a labor of love for a space we all hold dear.  --Ivy

Dead Wake by Erik Larson

When the Lusitania sank near Ireland, it took 1,200 dead souls with it. The disaster pulled America into an already roiling World War I, shifting history's course in its wake. His lush backgrounds create the illusion of standing on the doomed deck or looking over Churchill's shoulder. He paints rich characters and keeps you in suspense until the bitter end.

Rival Queens by Nancy Goldstone

When Elizabeth I and Philip II sat on their thrones it seemed the whole world was split between Catholics and Protestants. Most people are aware of the Spanish Inquisition, even if only through Monty Python. Lesser known is the internal struggle of the French. Goldstone takes it and manages to make it rather hilarious and relatable. Never have I laughed so much at footnotes.

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

The story starts with a young woman walking along a highway, covered in blood. The acolyte of a mysterious man known only as Father, she was orphaned at a young age along with several other children, each of whom was trained by Father as a librarian with different specialties—Language, War, Futures That Might Have Been. The best book I have read in quite some time.

Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente

Marya Morevna had three sisters who in turn had three suitors, but only she knew their secret. They weren’t men at all, but birds. This secret forged her path anew. She was thrown headlong into the arms of Koschei the Deathless and the watchful eye of Baba Yaga. Valente beautifully retells this ancient Russian folktale against the backdrop of Stalin’s regime.   —Ivy

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

This was the first “adult” book I read as a child. It scared the pants off me, but still kept me reading. With the shiny new movie—Jurassic World—just released out, it’s good to remember where the gory magic began. Before the hype, Jurassic Park was a captivating, page-turner filled with chills and thrills waiting to take its place in Sci-Fi/Fantasy history.   —Ivy
