Enlighten Me Written by Minh Lê, Illustrated by Chan Chau

Enlighten Me is a story about one kid’s experience with discrimination and bullying as well as a concise encapsulation of some of the central stories of the Buddha. Writer Minh Lê vividly captures the internal monologue of a boy struggling with some deep existential woes, and artist Chan Chau illustrates Bình’s development through excellent and expressive framing. This book is perfect for a kid who is curious about mindfulness, meditation, and the basics of Buddhism.

Oliver’s Great Big Universe by Jorge Cham

Astrophysics can be a very challenging topic for young children to grasp, but it becomes much easier to understand when it is told in a relatable and hilarious way. Stylistically, this book is a blend of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and the Science Comics series. Hand this to a kid, knowing that they just might be determined to become a physicist for at least a month after reading it.

Skeleanor the Decomposer by Emily Ettlinger

Skeleanor the Decomposer tells the story of a skeleton who wants nothing more than to play violin in a band. This graphic novel is so beautifully painted that the reader will wish they could live in Skeleanor’s world. Given Ettlinger’s obvious passion for music, this story is infectious with its characters’ love of creating something unique and joyful together, even with instruments that might be out of tune.—Isaac

The Eyes and the Impossible Written by Dave Eggers, Illustrated by Shawn Harris

Dave Eggers deftly translates the inner voice of a dog facing down humans who are recklessly building on and throwing off the “Equilibrium” (ecosystem) of his vast home in Golden Gate Park. The writing is charming, hilarious, and empathetic and creates a wonderfully unique reading experience for any reader who wants a story that is deeply personal, even if it isn’t from a person. If you liked Fantastic Mr. Fox or Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, you’ll love this.

I Am an Animal / Soy un animal by Alfredo Soderguit

There are many helpful tools for teaching young children both Spanish and English, but this bilingual board book in particular stands out as a wonderful meditation on the connectedness of all living animals. Soderguit provides clear and concise examples of phrases in both languages, alongside illustrations that are playful and simple enough to appeal to very young readers.

Chirri & Chirra: In the Night by Kaya Doi, Translated by David Boyd

This is my absolute favorite picture book series, in which sisters Chirri and Chirra go on a unique little adventure in every installment. Every page is softly illustrated with vibrant and textured color pencils, creating a wonderful and inviting magical world where black cats offer you sparkling full-moon sodas. A cozy nightcap to read to a little one before bed. Check out the other books in the series; I adore them all!

The Real Dada Mother Goose: A Treasury of Complete Nonsense written by Jon Scieszka

Kids and parents may be skeptical of an exploration of the avant-garde Dadaist art movement riffing on classic nursery rhymes, but readers will quickly discover that all this premise entails is playful word games and artistic expressions of nonsense. In a way, this book reminds me of how internet culture twists and reshapes familiar ideas in funny ways. Read this book with any kid who loves delightfully strange poetry with amusing illustrations.

I Was Born for This by Alice Oseman

Internet friends Angel (a huge fan of the boyband the Ark) and Jimmy (its lead singer) bond over music, fandom, and their complicated lives offline. Both narrators talk to the reader like a friend, with familiar language and inside jokes that will resonate with those who grew up online. Oseman explores themes like anxiety with gravity and compassion, making her endearing characters and their relationships more and more real. Nick and Charlie are reading this book on the cover of the upcoming Heartstopper novella!
