Flannery's Reviews

Flannery’s life has been about books since before she could read. While she mainly reads mystery, fantasy, and young adult, Flannery also enjoys some good non-fiction and the occasional novel. The Watsonville native worked at Bookshop for years and was our Used Book Manager and mystery section leader. In real life she enjoys fuzzy cats, the wild outdoors, and cupcakes.

Viva Frida by Yuyi Morales

Yuyi Morales is the wonderful artist who painted the vibrant illustrations in Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez, by Kathleen Krull—a great book that also garnered Morales a Pura Belpré Award. I wanted to highlight Viva Frida because Kahlo was such an amazing painter, and this book honors her so well. The illustrations are unique—incorporating various types of mixed media from dolls to paintings to felted animals—and the bilingual story is simple and perfect for early readers.  —Flannery

Gathering the Sun by Alma Flor Ada

This bilingual alphabet book is filled with rich, warm illustrations. It takes you from the fields and orchards into the lives of the people who work them. Each letter from the Spanish alphabet has a short poem written around the word, and between the lovely poems and illustrations, it celebrates the people who work the land. I love it.—Flannery

De Colores and Other Latin-American Folk Songs for Children by José-Luis Orozco

My second and third grade teacher used to sing us song from this book, so it retains a very special place in my heart. Filled with folks songs perfect for singing with children, this book has both the Spanish and English translations of the songs, and even has the sheet music! I love this book, and it’s perfect for anyone who loves to sing (even if they’re as bad at it as I am).  —Flannery

Putin Country by Anne Garrels

I’ve recently become fascinated by Russian history, and wondered what it’s like to live under a ruler like Vladimir Putin, a question answered in this book. Garrels spent years doing research in the town of Chelyabinsk, getting to know the town and its residents. Using the town as a lens to show what life is like for everyday Russians, Garrels has created an eye-opening glimpse into another world.  —Flannery

Dancing with the Devil in the City of God by Juliana Barbassa

As the world prepares for the 2016 Summer Olympics, all eyes are on Rio de Janeiro to see if they can pull it off. Journalist Juliana Barbassa, originally from Rio, wondered as well, so she moved back and began to investigate life in the City of God. This is an eye-opening, fascinating look at a turbulent place and the proud people fighting for their city and way of life. –Flan

John Muir's Book of Animals by John Muir

This lovely little book takes excerpts of John Muir’s writing on animals and presents them with absolutely beautiful illustrations. Muir’s writing is some of the best nature writing ever, and the watercolor paintings are a lovely homage. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves animals, the wild, or John Muir. –Flan

Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar

You remember the saga of the 33 Chilean miners who were trapped for 69 days beneath thousands of feet of rock, and the massive operation that went into rescuing them, but until you read this book, you don’t know the whole story. UCSC grad Tobar is the man the miners chose to tell their story, and it is a riveting account of their time underground as well as the aboveground battle to save them. –Flan

The Passage by Justin Cronin

The Passage is an epic, sprawling story that spans time and place, starting in the depths of the Amazon and weaving many threads together into a rich, layered tapestry. It’s a gripping, thrilling ride you become swiftly immersed in. Plus, vampires! I loved this book – seriously LOVED – and am unbearably excited to read the final book in the trilogy, which is coming out in May 2016! --Flan

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I adored Fangirl, and Rowell’s new novel is just as intriguing and delightful. You don’t need to read one book to enjoy the other, but if you like one, you should read them both. Carry On is the literary equivalent of a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows—deliciously rich and sweet, it’ll leave you feeling wonderfully warm and fuzzy inside. --Flan
