Flannery's Reviews

Flannery’s life has been about books since before she could read. While she mainly reads mystery, fantasy, and young adult, Flannery also enjoys some good non-fiction and the occasional novel. The Watsonville native worked at Bookshop for years and was our Used Book Manager and mystery section leader. In real life she enjoys fuzzy cats, the wild outdoors, and cupcakes.

Quiet by Susan Cain

Quiet is an engaging, meticulously researched insight into the different facets of introversion, as well as how our culture came to devalue the trait, and why this cultural suppression is to all our detriment. Focusing on extensive studies and introverted luminaries, this eloquent argument for the inherent value of introversion in our
extroverted world will simultaneously empower introverts and enlighten extroverts. Let us be reminded of the power of quiet, insight and thought, and applaud Susan Cain.

What’s Wrong with My Plant? by Deardorff and Wadsworth

I don’t do so well with plants, so I was delighted to find this book. It outlines common ailments in a clear, straightforward way, with plenty of helpful color drawings for easy identification. It also provides simple solutions for almost every problem you can encounter. With this book, even the most inept gardener (like myself) can keep a plant alive!

Awkward Family Pet Photos by Mike Bender and Doug Chernack

I love this book. When I get stressed out or sad, I pick a random page or two, and let hilarity take me away. There are animals in ridiculous costumes, animals making fools of their owners, animals in odd situations, and owners making fools of everyone involved. It’s simply amazing. Just try to read it without laughing.

The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron

My resolution this year is simple, and therefore, difficult: love myself more. Re-reading this is my first step. The first time I read it, I felt an immediate sense of overwhelming relief, because I finally understood that I’m not crazy, just biologically different. If you’ve ever felt that being highly sensitive is a negative, read this, and let it show you how positive your trait really is, and how to thrive in an overwhelming world!

Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler & Maira Kalman

Just broke up? This one’s for us! This beautiful book will make you cry and heal all at the same time. While this is an altogether exceptional book, what really strikes me is the amount of passion that went into making it. Every page, every illustration impresses upon me what a labor of love this was, for both author and illustrator, and that makes it a heartbreaking work of art.

Matched by Ally Condie

In a future where the Society’s word decides all, and their word is final. But when Cassia finds that she has been accidentally matched with two people, she finds herself opposing the Society and everything she has ever known, fighting for her free will. The simple, stripped down writing matches the sweet love story, and left me excited for the sequel (which is even better!).
