Flannery's Reviews

Flannery’s life has been about books since before she could read. While she mainly reads mystery, fantasy, and young adult, Flannery also enjoys some good non-fiction and the occasional novel. The Watsonville native worked at Bookshop for years and was our Used Book Manager and mystery section leader. In real life she enjoys fuzzy cats, the wild outdoors, and cupcakes.

Thomas Jefferson by Jon Meacham

Pulitzer Prize–winning biographer Meacham turns his mighty pen to our third president and founding father in his new book. Cutting through the mythology that surrounds Jefferson, Meacham exposes a complex and formidable man with a great love of power and progress. This is a thoroughly researched, beautifully written, and incisive biography that illuminates one of the most important figures in our nation’s history.

The Twelve by Justin Cronin

I have been desperately awaiting The Twelve, the continuation of Cronin’s The Passage, and have been rewarded with another vivid, sweeping epic that kept me up all night. Simultaneously sequel and prequel, this book is filled with new connections and characters, escaping middle book syndrome in every way. It’s everything I had hoped for, and more. And if you haven’t read The Passage, you should!

Phantom by Jo Nesbø

Nesbø returns with another explosive mystery starring the tortured, aging former detective Harry Hole, who probably would have gotten along well with Sherlock Holmes. Hole thought he’d escaped his troubles when he fled to Hong Kong, but soon finds himself pulled back to Sweden after the boy he helped raise is accused of murder. This is a great installment in the series, delving into an Oslo drug ring and Harry’s own troubled past.

Live by Night by Dennis Lehane

Dennis Lehane’s new novel revolves around a Prohibition-era gangster in the Roaring Twenties, following his rise from petty thief to the biggest and best rum runner in Florida. If you’re already a fan of Lehane’s stellar writing or of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, you’ll get caught up in this atmospheric novel, which Publishers Weekly (in a starred review) calls “a quintessentially American story that will appeal to readers of literary and crime fiction alike.”

It could be argued that we’ve hit a rough patch in our country’s history. Luckily for us, Stephen Colbert has all the answers! In his hilarious new book, Colbert outlines the path to our nation’s redemption (not that we need it, of course). The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen

After a serious trauma, Carl Morck is assigned to Department Q, home of Denmark’s cold cases, where, to his surprise, he finds himself pulled into a case. The flawed, tormented Morck is a hero worth rooting for, and Adler-Olsen has a deft sense of humor and a knack for surprises, as evidenced by the unexpected ending. This is a fantastic thriller that will leave you wanting more. Good thing the second book is out!

The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen

I was really impressed by Adler-Olsen’s debut novel. His new book, continuing the adventures of the king of cold cases, Carl Morck, is yet another swiftly paced, thrilling mystery. There have been some changes in Dept. Q (a second assistant!), but that doesn’t stop them from digging into a case involving a group of rich, twisted killers who hide their dastardly crimes behind their fortunes. This is a fast, fun, thoroughly enjoyable read.

Boomerang by Michael Lewis

This is a sharp, engaging look at the effect of the 2008 financial collapse on some of the places hit the hardest, as well as some of those who fell victim (often of their own volition) to the cheap credit that was a prelude to the disaster. Lewis has a way of making complex issues understandable without detracting from the severity of the issue, and this riveting expose is no different.
