Flannery's Reviews

Flannery’s life has been about books since before she could read. While she mainly reads mystery, fantasy, and young adult, Flannery also enjoys some good non-fiction and the occasional novel. The Watsonville native worked at Bookshop for years and was our Used Book Manager and mystery section leader. In real life she enjoys fuzzy cats, the wild outdoors, and cupcakes.

Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Stayed

Before Wild, Cheryl Strayed was Sugar, an advice columnist on
TheRumpus.net. But calling Sugar an advice columnist is like calling Willie Mays some guy who played baseball. Her responses were full – both in length, advice, and emotion. Tapping into her own life, Sugar’s letters are blunt, story-like, and heartbreaking lovely. I simply adored this book; my copy is dog-eared to death.

Raw + Material = Art by Tristan Manco

If there was a contest for amazing books with terrible covers, this would win Grand Prize. This dull, orange cover in no way hints at the unbelievable art showcased inside. Wood, metal, plastic, even children’s toys are all used to create stunning, wildly inventive works of art. Do yourself a favor, look inside. You’ll be blown away, I guarantee it.

Zooborns: The Next Generation by Andrew Bleiman

If you need the perfect gift for anyone who loves animals, this is it. Each page features a different adorable baby animal, from the incredibly rare, like the Sumatran Tiger, to the far more common, like the surprisingly dainty Caribbean Octopus (really, they’re darling). This book is almost overwhelming in its cuteness, and is guaranteed to produce squeals of joy.

I Could Pee on This by Francesco Marcuiliano

If cats could write, these are the poems they would pen, tackling important feline issues, such as being friends with a dog, and losing that favorite toy. Combine these hysterical poems with “Awww” inducing pictures of fuzzy kitties, and you have one ridiculously awesome book. Don’t believe me? Pick it up, read it, and then buy it for yourself and every other cat person in your life.

Silver by Rhiannon Held

I was done with werewolves until this fiercely unique debut piqued my interest. Held has created an atmospheric and layered world around insane Silver and her ally, pack enforcer Andrew Dare, as they search for the man responsible for Silver’s damage. Dark and twisted, sharply written, with deeply developed characters, this stunning book kept me up all night. I cannot recommend it enough.

Nightshifted by Cassie Alexander

In this fresh, fun urban fantasy, Edie, the new nurse on the supernatural ward of county hospital, gets more than she bargained for when she gets caught in a vampire war. Factor in a hot zombie, an irritable German ghost in a boom box, and a needy vampire, and Edie’s got a lot going on. I loved this unique debut by local author Alexander, and can’t wait for book two!

Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan

This captivating account of one young woman’s descent into madness is part medical mystery, part portrayal of the strength and dedication of an usually divided family, and overall a powerful example of the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit. Written with sharp introspection, humility, and humor, this mesmerizing memoir kept me reading late into the night and hasn’t left my mind since.

Skulls by Simon Winchester

Centering around British collector Alan Dudley’s vast collection of animal skulls, possibly the largest private collection in the world, renowned author Simon Winchester (The Professor and the Madman) explores every facet of the skull. This is a rich examination of an essential part of animal biology, exploring everything from history to culture. Centering the book are photos of the collection, with detailed descriptions of each skull and the creature from which it came. A truly fascinating, informative book.

Serengeti Spy by Anup Shah

I’ve wanted to visit the Serengeti since I was a little girl. As of now, I have not had the opportunity, but this stunning book makes me feel like I’m there. Using hidden cameras, Shah captured the passage of a year on the plains, automatically taking pictures of whatever came along, offering a rare glimpse of an untamed land and some very curious animals—including lions, elephants, cheetahs, and monkeys. This is a beautiful, incredibly unique book.
