Flannery's Reviews

Flannery’s life has been about books since before she could read. While she mainly reads mystery, fantasy, and young adult, Flannery also enjoys some good non-fiction and the occasional novel. The Watsonville native worked at Bookshop for years and was our Used Book Manager and mystery section leader. In real life she enjoys fuzzy cats, the wild outdoors, and cupcakes.

The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen

In his debut novel, The Keeper of Lost Causes, Adler-Olsen introduced Copenhagen detective Carl Morck, who was newly assigned to the cold case unit. Back from vacation with one case under his belt, Morck is ready to tackle a new one. Alternating between Morck’s investigation, those involved in the crime, and the homeless woman who may be the key to the case, this is a tense, twisty thriller that fans of Scandinavian mysteries will love.

Humboldt by Emily Brady

As famous for its secrecy as for its cannabis crop, Humboldt is revealed in Brady’s illuminating new book. Brady burrowed deep into the usually impenetrable community, and returned with a nuanced work of journalism that follows four different growers as they deal with the rapidly changing cannabis culture and laws. This book provides an eye-opening look at a unique place, its even more unique residents, and cannabis in general.

Vader’s Little Princess by Jeffrey Brown

I adored Darth Vader & Son, Browns first foray into the Star Wars universe, in which Darth Vader attempts to raise a young Luke. In this equally awesome new book, Vader embarks on the daunting task of raising a headstrong young Princess Leah. Filled with adorable drawings and jokes with plenty of winks at the movies, this is a book any Star Wars fan will love, parent or not.

My Beloved Brontosaurus by Brian Switek

As a young girl, I was always more into dinosaurs than Barbie, and that hasn’t changed a bit. So I was super excited to come across this great new book that addresses recent discoveries in paleontology as well as the tenuous ties between paleontology, pop culture, and our understanding of dinosaurs. Well researched and very engaging, this is a fun, informative read that dino fans will love!

Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

I was on a break from fiction when Kat insisted that I read this. Despite my initial skepticism, I fell head over heels for it immediately. I’m not going to recap it for you, because it’s more important to tell you that this is written by a former Arrested Development writer, and it’s one of the funniest, oddest, most original novels I have ever read.

Girl Walks Into a Bar by Rachel Dratch

Anyone who watched SNL in the 00’s knows that Rachel Dratch is awesome, and this is the ultimate proof of that. In this laugh-out-loud funny memoir, she shares childhood adventures, on-set shenanigans, and the dating disasters that eventually led to the relationship that unexpectedly made her a mom. Honest, sweet, and often completely ridiculous, Dratch proves that happily ever after is whatever you make it.

Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan

Cahalan was 24, with a promising career and relationship, when her brain violently rebelled against her, baffling doctors and leaving her fighting for her life and sanity. Both medical mystery and astonishing story of familial devotion, this is also Cahalan’s attempt to recreate a time she barely remembers, her honesty makes this is a startling, powerful read that I could not put down.

Feminist Ryan Gosling by Danielle Henderson

Hey girl, did you know that the world’s sexiest person totally loves women? Thanks to the Feminist Ryan Gosling blog, and the fabulous book it begat, Ryan Gosling can remind you how incredible women are every single day. And while he may not have been directly involved in the making of this book, the fact that he hasn’t sued over it makes me think he approves.
