Casey's Reviews

A woman sits on a flying broomstick in a Quidditch arena, holding a Quaffle.Casey is the second-generation owner of Bookshop Santa Cruz. Her earliest memory is riding the rocking horse in the kids section when the store was located across the street. When not reading Harry Potter with her two kids, she is an avid reader of new works of fiction, history and politics and loves to read with her book group.

Unfinished Business by Anne-Marie Slaughter

In 2012, Anne-Marie Slaughter wrote an article for the Atlantic titled “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” which soon became the most read article in the magazine’s history. The article’s thesis, outlining the struggle of today’s mothers in creating work–life balance, spawned years of discussion, debate, and study. Now, in Unfinished Business: Women Men Work Family, Slaughter offers a superb framework for thinking about gender equality at work and at home. A must-read for anyone concerned with the well-being of families in the modern age.  --Casey

Geek Dad by Ken Denmead

Given our proximity to Silicon Valley, most Santa Cruz dads are constantly searching for ways to bring innovation to parenting. Ken Denmead, who couldn’t bear to play Candyland one more time with his five children, had similar aspirations when he launched a Wired blog soliciting ideas to bridge the divide between kids games and all things geeky. Presto! Millions of tips later, Denmead compiled Geek Dad and The Geek Dad’s Guide to Weekend Fun, both filled with the best geeky activities to do with your children. Super- cool projects include electronic origami, making your own cartoons, pirate cartography and wind-up toy finger painting. Two books that both fathers and kids will enjoy.  -Casey

Nurture Shock by Po Bronson & Ashley Merryman

For analytical dads who want to parent based on facts and the latest research, Nurture Shock will both inform and entertain. Focusing on the latest neurobiological facts about child development, Bronson and Merryman dispel the usefulness of many modern parenting strategies while they untangle issues related to sibling relationships, lying, teen rebellion and childhood intelligence. calls it “a highly readable Malcolm Gladwell-esque look at the social science of child rearing” while the Huffington Post says “it will knock your socks off.”  -Casey

Home Game by Michael Lewis

Michael Lewis, famed sports and business author (The Blind Side, Liars Poker, The Big Short), tackles his toughest subject yet: Fatherhood. Chronicling the first few months after the birth of each of his three children, Lewis’ infectious wit and candidness provide one of the most accurate (and funny) portrayals of fatherhood I’ve ever read. Favorite moment: Lewis recalling his exhausting and excruciating father-daughter camp-out at Berkeley’s Fairy Land only to later decide that it was one of the best nights of his life.  -Casey

Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein

The Caldecott Honor Book Interrupting Chicken perfectly captures the lively imagination of a toddler while hearing stories at bedtime. Interrupting his father’s best efforts to read books, Little Red Chicken dramatically inserts himself into the stories until he himself is interrupted in a most unusual way. The back and forth between father and son will be a familiar and endearing scene for any father with young children.  -Casey

Sisters & Brothers by Steve Jenkins & Robin Page

Did you know that when an elephant wanders away from its herd, putting itself in danger of encounters with lions, it is a protective big sister who usually guides the elephant back to safety? Or that wild turkey brothers stay together for life, and even help attract mates and chase off rival males for each other? These revelations, along with more stories about sibling relationships—from Nile crocodiles to black widow spiders—make the new book Sisters & Brothers both informative and fun. Which animal species is most like your family? The Naked Mole Rats who lay down in tunnels for others to walk on depending upon age status, or the beavers who work together with their siblings to gather bark to feed on during winter? Filled with science, animal facts, and great illustrations, this book is a fun exploration for the whole family.  —Casey

Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar

Someone once told me that, to truly understand human behavior, I need only watch the classic jury movie “Twelve Angry Men.” Now, I tell those same people that all they have to do is read Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine and the Miracle That Set Them Free. Told with exclusive access to the miners who were trapped for 69 days deep underground, UCSC graduate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hector Tobar, vividly and brilliantly describes the backgrounds, faith and motivations that allowed these men to survive. It’s no wonder that author Ann Patchett chose it as the inaugural selection of the NPR book club. —Casey

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

This beautiful, sweeping novel captures the feelings of World War II from the vantage point of ordinary lives. Following a blind French girl and an orphaned German boy, Doerr evokes the terror of the war and the hope that continues to survive even in its midst. A true masterpiece with stunning prose and deeply developed characters, this is by far my favorite book of 2014.
