Bookshop Ambassador Karen's Reviews

Karen Burgess has been a reader and Bookshop lover since the 1990s, book club member since 2012. I will read most anything but have a particular love of John Steinbeck (great for book clubs), Timothy Egan (great for book clubs and non fiction lovers) and Joan Didion (just plain great). I have had the good fortune of being a part of my book club since it has expanded my tastes and broadened my reading and wine drinking. We have been together 7 years, which translates to having read over 80 books in our time together thus far. We won't be counting the wine glasses.

The Clock Dance by Anne Tyler

This book is subtle yet surreal, and a bit of a ride. With characters anyone can relate to, and actions that aren't so easy to relate to, this is the perfect summer read. The story winds its way along and the reader wants to try and figure out what is going to happen. Tuck this in your bag for the times when you have a moment to escape into the story. You will want to read it to the end as quickly as you can. Enjoy! —Karen Burgess, Book Group Ambassador

A Week in Winter

An ocean filled story set on the west coast of Ireland and narrated by a voice that sounds like Maureen O'Hara, this audiobook is the perfect spoil for rainy day weather.  A week in Winter fulfills all the wants of an audiobook--beautiful narration, captivating plot and characters with stories you want to hear. The listener will be all in to see how it ends, as is Maeve Binchy's craft.

The Year of Magical Thinking

Essentially a book about grief and mourning, it is really a love story.  Didion writes analytically and almost antiseptically about death, but shares such a deep and personal experience that any reader who has ever experienced grief and loss will immediately recognize themselves.  It is in this way that the book becomes gentle reassurance for anyone who has felt out of place and misunderstood in the face of loss. A beautiful book about a difficult topic.
