Bookshop Ambassador Judi's Review

Judi Heher has been a reader all her life and fell in love with BSC when she moved to Santa Cruz in 1986. One of her earliest memories was getting her very own library card and immediately checking out “Little House on the Big Wood”. She reads just about everything although it does take some convincing to pick up a horror story! Her favorite authors are Michael Ondaatje, Isak Dinesen, J.R.R. Tolkien, George R. R. Martin, Homer Hickam, and Pearl S. Buck. Judi loves how book clubs have expanded her appreciation for different authors and genres. Book club selections she never would have picked up otherwise have exposed her to ideas she never would have entertained and stories that have enriched her life.

The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri

How do you see? How do you see strength? Evil? Resilience? Tragedy? Hope? Hopelessness? Love? Lefteri asks these questions in The Beekeeper of Aleppo. This story is about a young man, Uri, his wife Afra, and their escape from war-torn Aleppo. They experience the unimaginable loss of war and it’s up to Uri to get all he has left—his wife—to the safety of the UK. Uri and Afra are gentle people and so is the book. It doesn’t hide the horrors the two suffer, but the revelations of these atrocities are veiled and tragic, not bloody or graphic. The text reflects Uri’s spirit and perspective. Lefteri spent time volunteering in refugee camps and has worked with refugees in the UK. Her deep knowledge of their plight, both acute and long term, has produced an empathetic account of survival and love. This is a must-read. - Judi Heher, Bookshop Santa Cruz Book Group Amabassador

Radical Kindness

This powerful short book gives us all more tools to live more kindly. We're reminded to look at others as people who have complex backstories that influence their actions, and that we can never really know those backstories. It provides the background and tools to implement kindness at all levels and with all people - even your own family! “Radical Kindness” resonates at a depth that surprised me! It inspires me and gives me greater motivation to work at being kinder.

Under the Wide and Starry Sky: A Novel

Good historical fiction makes you believe you’re reading a wonderfully written biography. This book does just that. I knew absolutely nothing about Fanny Stevenson and now I want to learn more about the life she shared with Robert Louis Stevenson. Globe-trotting from France to California to the South Pacific, Fanny and RLS were always in search of either health or a great story and sometimes the found both! Fanny broke gender and moral norms as she marched to the beat of her own drummer. We should all be that brave.
