Bookshop Ambassador Jennifer's Reviews

Jennifer Wood earns book money by working at UCSC as an academic counselor for engineering students. She also freelances as an editor of academic papers, resumes, and cover letters. She reads before, during, and after work, on weekends, in coffee shops, at the beach (in a box, with a fox). When not reading, Jennifer enjoys singing, creating paper collages, drinking tea, practicing bendy yoga shapes, and taking walks. Jennifer is most drawn to books with complex characters and compelling stories. She reads primarily fantasy, YA, literary fiction, historical fiction, mystery, and will pick up any book that has magic in the title or description. She also enjoys reading about psychology, sociology, spirituality, gender studies, ethnic studies, and history that shares forgotten or marginalized voices. A strong supporter of brick and mortar independents, Jennifer’s first question when travelling is: where’s the closest bookstore and how do I get there?

Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout

Fans of Strout’s Olive Kitteridge will be thrilled with this follow-up. Olive remains as brutally honest and irritable as ever, her world packed with complexities that befuddle and amuse her. The genius of Strout’s juicy prose is found in her characters and how their stories illustrate what it is to be human: vulnerable, sweet, disappointing, heartbreaking, heartwarming. We recognize ourselves and our neighbors in these stories—and maybe our book group members, too! - Jennifer Wood, Bookshop Santa Cruz Book Group Ambassador

Don’t miss a special evening celebrating Olive, Again with A Literary Soirée with Elizabeth Strout on October 29th.

Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World

Read this chipper, breezy graphic book for daily inspiration; you can open at any page and you'll find brief biographies of women making a difference. Bagieu's accompanying art is the icing on top, deftly communicating each woman's confidence, experience, and story with the perfect blend of cheeky humor and respect. After reading this I immediately bought copies for my best friends. Recommended for book groups of all ages (appropriate for Young Adult readers), busy readers, summer beach reads, Women's History Month, groups who are interested in biographies, groups who've read everything.
