While Bel Canto is one of Patchett’s more popular works, The Magician’s Assistant is my favorite. The idea that we can be with someone for years and still never know them completely is troubling yet intriguing (at least in fiction). Also I enjoyed that Patchett challenges the concept of what makes a family. The answer? Well, you’ll have to read the book! - Karena

Franzen’s darkly comic masterpiece provides us with a microcosm of American life at the turn of the twentieth century—a culture and an economy in transition—a boom on the brink of bust. Exemplified through the lens of a fractured, Midwestern family—an ailing patriarch, his wife, and their three adult children—The Corrections is as engaging today as it was in 2001. - Aric

When a giant squid washes ashore in London and then disappears after being brought to the Natural History Museum, all hell breaks loose. Cults, old gods, gatekeepers, secret police, and the undead. It’s all here. And with a mystery of mysterious proportions to tear it all apart. This book is a grand ‘ole time. - Ian

Tobias Wolff calls this the best thing ever written about the Vietnam War. An amalgam of autobiography, war reportage, and fiction, it tells the story of O’Brien himself and the other soldiers in his platoon in such a powerful way you can’t imagine anything else needing to be said on the subject. The perfect companion to the new Ken Burns and Lynn Novick documentary. - RIco

My favorite novel by Faulkner, and the most accessible of his major works, Light in August is a flat-out masterpiece of style, structure and storytelling. Following the fates of many characters at once, all of them swirling around and toward each other, the sense of tragic menace is palpable. For my money, this is the quintessential Southern Gothic novel. - Rico

This book broke my heart, put it back together, then repeated the process, in the best way possible. Homegoing follows two sisters and their descendants for 200 years, from Ghana to the United States, with some of the most powerful writing in the last few years. - Karena

As a fan of both books about the 1920s and books about magic, this novel is firmly in my literary wheelhouse. I really enjoyed how the story swapped between the main characters who were on either side of the law. Joan as a magic bootlegger trying to provide for her family and Alex, an undercover cop, trying to gain redemption for his father's crimes. - Karena

There is nothing I don't love about this book. The dialogue is smart, the sex scenes are sizzling, and the cover is gorgeous. The heroine is a tattoo artist with a complicated history with her first love who she keeps encountering when she moves back home. Bonus: this is Rai's first novel with a major publisher and it's well deserved. - Karena

This book made me feel like a child discovering the world of books. Fledgling is a wholly new—norm-destroying vampire mythology is explored through the eyes of the strangest protagonists I've ever encountered. This is science fiction at its most cutting and mind-bending. Months after reading it I'm still asking myself questions and dreaming about this universe. - Clara

Captivating historical fiction about a priceless painting, the painter who created it, the man who inherited it, and the celebrated art historian who created a forgery of it.  Smith skillfully weaves a multi-layered story narrated by the painter Sara de Vos in 17th century Amsterdam, the owner Marty de Groot in 1957 New York, and the forger Ellie Shipley in 2000 Sydney Australia. - Trey
