Spring Reading, 2018

Some of the best books of the season, recommended by Bookshop Santa Cruz staff.

The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind by Barbara K. Lipska

As a fan of Furiously Happy and Hyperbole and a Half (both of which focus on the emotional illogic of different mental illnesses), I was hoping to enjoy this book, but I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. Dr. Lipska balances her own diagnoses with her professional knowledge and the raw experiences of herself and her family. Alternating diagnostic chapters with personal ones, this is an intimate, well-rounded look at what it means to briefly lose control of one's mind and the struggle to regain it. - Rachel

Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover

Tara Westover’s memoir is an incredible read, not just because she details a childhood foreign to so many of us, but because she writes with such generosity and honesty to the entire experience. Westover comes of age among religious fanaticism, government distrust (read: no school, no doctors), extreme paranoia and outright danger (read next: child labor in a scrapyard), and yet she rises above to learn herself into university and the world beyond, but always with an eye to her family, both beloved and estranged. - Melinda
