When Nobody Was Watching by Carli Lloyd

It is a rare treat to have memoirs by two of the best soccer players of all time come out in the same year. And, no, I am not qualifying Abby Wambach or Carli Lloyd as female soccer players, for they have proven themselves as elite within the entire sport—both World Cup and Olympic champions, Wambach as the highest international goal scorer and Lloyd as the 2015 FIFA Player of the Year. Known not only for their talent on the field, these women bring their struggles, triumphs, passions, and personalities (as well as an inside look at the USWNT!) to their books, and yes, reader, sports fan, feminist, human, you need them both, because together Wambach and Lloyd represent the power and diversity of the human spirit in sport. —Melinda

QB: My Life Behind the Spiral by Steve Young

Steve Young, the star quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in the 1990s, transports us to many seminal moments in his riveting memoir. By writing about his life, from his father’s influence on his work ethic (his father was aptly nicknamed “Grit”) to the anxieties that plagued Steve’s time on the field, to his pursuit of a law degree to quench his insatiable thirst for knowledge, Young brings us closer to understanding what drove him to the pinnacle of athletic success and into the hearts of the 49er Faithful everywhere (including mine). —Casey

A History of American Sports in 100 Objects by Cait Murphy

This terrific collection tells the history of American athletics through notable objects—from a pre-1845 lacrosse stick to Tony Hawk’s first skateboard; from Roberto Clemente’s baseball card to a soccer ball from the 1999 Women’s World Cup—spanning three dozen different sports. I was surprised at how powerful it was to read about each object and athlete or event behind it. I can’t imagine a sports fan who wouldn’t love this book.  —S.B.

Game Changers by Molly Schiot

Two years ago, Molly Schiot began the Instagram account @TheUnsungHeroines, posting a photo each day of a female athlete who had changed the face of sports in the pre–Title IX age. These women paved the way for Serena Williams, Carli Lloyd, and Lindsey Vonn and slowly but surely, the account gained a following. The result is Game Changers, a beautiful and empowering collection about these trailblazers.
