Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris

From the hilarious brain of funnyman-next-door David Sedaris, regular contributor to NPR’s This American Life and to the New Yorker, comes another book of observations and stories about daily life. Whether he is talking about disciplining children or jet-setting to Australia, Sedaris has a knack for pointing out the humor in all aspects of life, and doing it with perfect comedic timing. If you’ve never read Sedaris, this new book is a great place to start!

Humboldt by Emily Brady

As famous for its secrecy as for its cannabis crop, Humboldt is revealed in Brady’s illuminating new book. Brady burrowed deep into the usually impenetrable community, and returned with a nuanced work of journalism that follows four different growers as they deal with the rapidly changing cannabis culture and laws. This book provides an eye-opening look at a unique place, its even more unique residents, and cannabis in general.

Farther Away by Jonathan Franzen

I can’t remember the last time I was so riveted by a collection of essays. Franzen’s passionate, intelligent engagement with such a wide scope of topics—from a gripping narrative about songbird poachers in Cyprus to remarks on the death of David Foster Wallace—make Farther Away the kind of book you read for both pleasure and enrichment. And those are the best books to be found, in my opinion.

This Is How by Augusten Burroughs

From the author of Running with Scissors comes this self-help book, complete with the frank honesty, wry sarcasm, and heart and depth that one might expect from Burroughs. Publishers Weekly called this book, “Hilarious and searingly straight forward… Burroughs turns the self-help genre upside-down.” Burroughs makes the reader wince with his insight, and he also offers hope. Think Cheryl Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things, but condensed into punches and arrows.

Vader’s Little Princess by Jeffrey Brown

I adored Darth Vader & Son, Browns first foray into the Star Wars universe, in which Darth Vader attempts to raise a young Luke. In this equally awesome new book, Vader embarks on the daunting task of raising a headstrong young Princess Leah. Filled with adorable drawings and jokes with plenty of winks at the movies, this is a book any Star Wars fan will love, parent or not.

God’s Hotel by Victoria Sweet

God’s Hotel is about the last standing almshouse in San Francisco, the Laguna Honda Hospital. Dr. Victoria Sweet—part Oliver Sacks, part Tracy Kidder—has written a lovely book about Laguna Honda at its heyday and the changes that occurred as modernization was forced upon it. Dr. Sweet practiced for 20 years at Laguna Honda, where patients too sick and too desolate for other facilities often ended up. Something special developed there, and it became a place of healing. A fascinating journey into the heart of medicine.
