Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

This is a great pick for fall and Halloween! Yadriel’s journey of love and acceptance within his traditional, Latinx clan will resonate with anyone who’s had a bumpy road with their own family. Yadriel battles darkness both magical and personal to show his family who he truly is and become a brujo. A great book for young folks discovering their identity, those who want to be a good ally, and anyone who loves spooky tales! —Jae

Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi & Yusef Salaam

Every so often I come across a book that I want to buy a hundred copies of and give it to everyone I know, and maybe a few strangers. These are usually the hardest to review as I am simply at a loss for words. Punching the Air, a novel in verse about a wrongfully imprisoned Black teenager, co-written by one of the Exonerated Five, is one of those books—incomparably beautiful, radical, poignant, and so much more. Don't miss it! —Ksenia

We Are Not Free by Traci Chee

The harrowing truth of the abuse of Japanese American citizens during WWII in the U.S. is an oft-overlooked aspect of Western history. The mass incarceration of citizens believed to be a "threat" to national security in internment camps feels pertinent to our current political climate. While this work is a fictional account of families who were forced to leave Japantown in San Francisco, you can tell Chee (A UCSC alumni!) did her research. Perfect for any historical fiction fan. —MJ
