2014 Staff Fiction Favorites

Ariel Lawhon is a master at capturing a reader's interest and holding their heart captive right up to the last moment. I had very complicated feelings toward the three titular characters and my heart was stretched and pulled throughout their whole ordeal. The suspense, the history, and the atmosphere all combined to keep me up late at night.

Moreno's debut novel is absolutely stunning. Protagonist Piper Gallagher is an EMT driver living in Los Angeles, and violence is a normal part of her day. Her attempts to grapple with this while running from the demons of her past creates a striking and realistic portrayal of the complexity of trauma. This book will haunt you, and poke you in the places you feel most human.

This is the first book in VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy, a strange, literary sci-fi series. While Annihilation can stand alone, the books build off each other in interesting ways, so I recommend reading them all. But be warned: don’t expect many answers to your questions—these books are all about falling through a rabbit hole to a mysterious destination.

Laird Hunt’s novel follows a woman who calls herself Ash and leaves her husband behind to fight in the Civil War. It’s been months since I finished the book, and it’s still shadowing me, hovering just behind my shoulder when I least expect it. Ash’s voice is haunting and lyrical and heartbreaking. This one of the best books of 2014.

I loved this book, a smart page-turner centered around the explosion of a private spaceship shuttling wealthy tourists into orbit (a timely subject now, as it happens). The main character is Jess, a botany professor married to an engineer at SpaceX. The book is a series of emails she writes to her ex-lover in Canada, to whom she tells all, even the stuff she shouldn't.

Hands down the best graphic novel I’ve read this year! I absolutely loved this Wild-West-meets-fantasy tale of Death and his family. There’s a framing narrative, stories within stories, and excellent action sequences. The art is fantastic, and every little detail contributes to the unfolding story. Perfect for anyone who enjoys more literary graphic novels, I highly recommend it.

Present day, an actor playing King Lear has a heart attack and dies. Fifteen years later, after a worldwide pandemic, a caravan of actors and musicians travel the ruins of the US performing Shakespeare and fighting for survival. When the two storylines come together at the book’s heartbreaking climax, you will be both terrified of the future and overjoyed to be human and alive.

This beautiful, sweeping novel captures the feelings of World War II from the vantage point of ordinary lives. Following a blind French girl and an orphaned German boy, Doerr evokes the terror of the war and the hope that continues to survive even in its midst. A true masterpiece with stunning prose and deeply developed characters, this is by far my favorite book of 2014.

If you haven’t read Penny’s stellar Inspector Gamache series, please go buy the first, Still Life, right now. Why? Because her writing is beautiful, her detective is a modern-day Poirot, and in How the Light Gets In, she concludes a plotline that has been building over eight books with incredible skill. All of her books are great, but this one completely blew me away.

Winters’s Last Policeman trilogy is one of the most original series I’ve ever read, and World of Trouble brings it to a stellar close. The premise seems dark (the world is ending!), but these books are funny and wise. I love how Winters considers what people would do knowing the end is nigh, and how the stakes are raised as the day of reckoning approaches.
