The Northern California Craft Beer Guide by Ken Weaver

The Northern California Craft Beer Guide is perfectly suited for the novice or the full-on snob. The best part is exploring the crazy whacked-up brews that Californians are toting in their alco-arsenal (I mean, BACON BEER, RIGHT?) This guide is the best thing since Lagunitas brought back the Brown Shugga'. Bonus: Santa Cruz haunts get great shout-outs!

Books to Die For by John Connolly and Declan Burke

The leading lights of today’s mystery and suspense fiction weigh in on their favorites. Think of your favorite mystery author and chances are you’ll find them in this volume. A great strength of the collection is that the editors know terrific writers from both sides of the Atlantic and have twisted a lot of arms to get this done. They’re crime writers. Don’t make them have to come twist yours.

Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Stayed

Before Wild, Cheryl Strayed was Sugar, an advice columnist on
TheRumpus.net. But calling Sugar an advice columnist is like calling Willie Mays some guy who played baseball. Her responses were full – both in length, advice, and emotion. Tapping into her own life, Sugar’s letters are blunt, story-like, and heartbreaking lovely. I simply adored this book; my copy is dog-eared to death.

Raw + Material = Art by Tristan Manco

If there was a contest for amazing books with terrible covers, this would win Grand Prize. This dull, orange cover in no way hints at the unbelievable art showcased inside. Wood, metal, plastic, even children’s toys are all used to create stunning, wildly inventive works of art. Do yourself a favor, look inside. You’ll be blown away, I guarantee it.

Zooborns: The Next Generation by Andrew Bleiman

If you need the perfect gift for anyone who loves animals, this is it. Each page features a different adorable baby animal, from the incredibly rare, like the Sumatran Tiger, to the far more common, like the surprisingly dainty Caribbean Octopus (really, they’re darling). This book is almost overwhelming in its cuteness, and is guaranteed to produce squeals of joy.

I Could Pee on This by Francesco Marcuiliano

If cats could write, these are the poems they would pen, tackling important feline issues, such as being friends with a dog, and losing that favorite toy. Combine these hysterical poems with “Awww” inducing pictures of fuzzy kitties, and you have one ridiculously awesome book. Don’t believe me? Pick it up, read it, and then buy it for yourself and every other cat person in your life.

Mortality by Christopher Hitchens

For years I’ve enjoyed reading Hitchen’s thoughts on a variety of subjects, and I always found something valuable in his words. What topic more important for a mind like his than mortality? Though I am heartbroken at his passing, I am also grateful for this clear-eyed, compassionate book. The afterword, written by his widow Carol Blue, is wrenchingly beautiful. Required reading for searching minds.

There are many books about Santa Cruz from which to choose, but Hasenhauer’s artwork is lovely, and each piece is paired with a detailed map, directing you to the exact spot that inspired her work. Charming pictures, and a delightful way to get to know the area through the eyes of a local artist.
