Louise Erdrich’s fine, tender, and candid new novel, The Round House, is told through 13-year-old Joe, who lives on an Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. When his mother is brutally attacked, Joe tries to seek his own justice in an adult world of flawed bureaucracy and broken systems. He begins to collect the old stories that have been handed down, stories that inform his understanding about what happened to his mother, and the novel reads as part mystery, part spiritual quest. He is a boy on the cusp of history, of grief and anger and forgiveness, and of a culture that is woven into him. You won’t want to miss this.

In this new novel, Flight Behavior, one can clearly sense Barbara Kingsolver’s origins as a biologist through her taut and beautiful descriptions of nature. Set in the rural community of Tennessee’s Appalachian Mountains, we meet Dellarobia Turnbow, a young wife and mother who feels confined by the constraints of her bucolic life. On her way to commit an act that threatens to break her family apart, she stumbles upon a mysterious phenomenon of nature that holds a resounding effect that will reach far beyond Dellarobia’s small community. There are no simple answers in this book. And that natural phenomenon that Delorobia discovers? We Santa Cruzans are in the unique position to find our own version of it right here in our own backyard.

This book has everything: intrigue, adventure, romance, and enough twists and turns to keep even the most restless mind occupied. Emil Larson stands on the cusp of history, and he’ll either get everything he’s ever wanted, or he’ll lose his wits, his fortune, and even his life, as the city itself stands on the brink of ruin or revolution, depending on how you read the cards. A delicious and satisfying read.

Dennis Lehane’s new novel revolves around a Prohibition-era gangster in the Roaring Twenties, following his rise from petty thief to the biggest and best rum runner in Florida. If you’re already a fan of Lehane’s stellar writing or of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, you’ll get caught up in this atmospheric novel, which Publishers Weekly (in a starred review) calls “a quintessentially American story that will appeal to readers of literary and crime fiction alike.”

I was not already a disciple of the mindfulness movement, but I think Nancy may
have won me over. This book is full of stories, advice, and exercises to help
you prepare for child birth and a life-time of parenting. The lessons are
presented in a very positive, non-judgmental manner that allowed me to select
what was working for me and leave be those things that didn’t.

Interweaving the lives of several inhabitants of Berkeley’s iconic neighborhood, Chabon creates a convincingly complex portrayal of a diverse and complicated urban setting. It’s a rich epic full of the emotional and material ups-and-downs of the characters, the beautiful meandering of elegant prose, and a passion for the details and subtle humor that bring an expansive novel to life.

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Something about it reminded me of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle—maybe the beauty of language, the spareness, or the originality of the story. Set in a verdant valley in the Pacific Northwest during the early years of the 20th century, the characters in this debut novel don't say much but they feel and experience a lot. If you like debut novels, unique plots, and memorable characters, I highly recommend it! You'll be telling your friends about this one.

Stop! You just giggled a bit, didn’t you? Don’t worry, we all did—we don’t really know what to do with this word, much less understand the profoundly fascinating set of body parts and history behind it. Driven by personal crisis, Naomi Wolf presents a fully original examination of the vagina: sexual pleasure and function, biology, emotional and mental connections, social and political constructions… Don’t waste another day under-appreciating this wholly important part of humanity.
