I found and loved this book last winter, and as soon as the temperature drops I know I’ll want to read it again and again. It’s a gorgeous retelling of that classic fairy tale in which a childless woodcutter and his wife make a girl out of snow who miraculously comes to life overnight. Ivey’s incredible gift for storytelling breathes new life both into the characters and into her fittingly chosen backdrop of the 1920s Alaskan wilderness. The line between reality and magic gives this lovely novel a sense of the fantastic while making every moment believable enough to make your heart ache.

It could be argued that we’ve hit a rough patch in our country’s history. Luckily for us, Stephen Colbert has all the answers! In his hilarious new book, Colbert outlines the path to our nation’s redemption (not that we need it, of course). This “sharp-tongued, sweet-natured masterpiece of Jewish family life” (Kirkus Reviews) is set in the suburbs of Chicago. “Attenberg has written a brilliant novel in The Middlesteins, as blazing, ferocious, and great-hearted as anything I’ve read. For anyone who has ever known heartbreak, the terrible love of a family, or a passion so deep you think it’ll kill you, The Middlesteins will blow you away.” —Lauren Groff, The Monsters of Templeton

Wolfe (Bonfire of the Vanities) returns with a big, panoramic story of the new America. “As if the 45 years from Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test to here hadn’t passed, Wolfe is back to some old tricks, including an ever-shifting, sometimes untrustworthy point of view, dizzying pans from one actor to another and rat-a-tat prose....A welcome pleasure from an old master.” —Kirkus, starred review

What’s not to love about Ellen DeGeneres? The standup comedian, TV host, author, and actress is absolutely charming, quirky, and hilarious—all qualities that shine through in her latest book. “With her dogged optimism and goofy dance moves, there is something endlessly likeable about DeGeneres, and [in Seriously…I’m Kidding] her personality jumps off every page.” —NPR

This is a rainy-day favorite of mine. Actually, I could read it any day, rain or shine. Salinger's dialogue- and detail-heavy prose turns some people off of this novel, but I find it charming and enjoyable. The quirky relationship between the Glass siblings sets a beautiful backdrop to Franny's spiritual crisis, and the glimpses into their past through letters and stories are so beautifully told.
