Leo Brown was raised in Aptos California. He went to Aptos High School, The University of Southern California and San Jose State University. His martial arts training began in 1972 with Kam Yuen, the advisor to the television program "Kung Fu" in Los Angeles. He went on on to achieve Black Belt rankings in Shorin-Ji Ryu with Mr. Richard Kim of The Butokukai in San Francisco and in Shotokan with Mr. Yaguchi of The Japanese Karate Association in Denver.
