Book choice: Daring to Rest by Karen Brody

My motto since junior high has been “I’ll be mellow when I’m dead.” Sleeping has felt like a waste of precious time. I’m paying the price for constant busy-ness now because I’ve pretty much forgotten how to sleep. So when I went looking for a book that might help, I was willing to try something completely out of my comfort zone, even though it sounds too good to be true—and found Daring to Rest by Karen Brody. She teaches yoga nidra, a meditative practice focusing on deep relaxation, which is intended not only to improve the restfulness of sleep, but to help shed physical and mental exhaustion in order to make room for wholeness and courage. Well. Yoga that requires a comfy blanket? Count me in. I’ve never done yoga or meditation of any kind (too mellow!), so this will be an adventure. A restful adventure. —C.N.

Mid-month Check-in: While a lot in this book is a little more woo-woo than I care for, it has many things that I can take and make my own. The guided meditation has been the most helpful, so far. I'm still struggling to find the blocks of time to rest, but even the fact that I'm thinking about "making time to rest" gives me encouragement that I'm moving forward.
