Independent Bookstore Day 2018 at Bookshop Santa Cruz is a daylong celebration of books, community and ACTIVISM. This past year in our literary world has featured a vibrant reclamation of political power by talented artistic and literary voices of every creed. Bookshop has picked up that banner with a series of locally-focused programs, events, and fundraisers; and Independent Bookstores across our nation have served this year as powerful champions of political engagement and solidarity between neighbors. On Saturday, April 28th, we celebrate the activist spirit in literature during our 5th annual INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE DAY.
Do you have a favorite literary feminist? Are you or do you know a youth-activist? Do you like free prizes? Curious about composting? JOIN US!

10 AM -- Literary Feminists Photobooth: Which Literary Heroine Inspires You?
Show off your indie bookstore pride with our cool props and your smiling face. This year’s booth has a LITERARY FEMINIST theme… come in your best feminist attire, bring a costume, hold a book, or carry a sign that represents your favorite feminist heroine in literature. The most creative entries submitted will have the chance to win cool prizes, and be featured on our social media. Let’s show Ms. Atwood, Hermione and Jane that they taught us well! Opening ceremony begins at 10am with a reading.
11 AM -- "Act Up" Mayor’s Community Read: Student Civic Participation and Letter-Writing with Mayor David Terrazas!
Santa Cruz Mayor David Terrazas will host a student civic participation hour, inspired by the book Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You by Marley Dias. Mayor Terrazas will share with us his early experiences as a youth activist writing letters to make change, and will lead kids through their own letter-writing activity with the help of educators from the Young Writers Program. This event will include fun projects built around civic engagement for those young people who care deeply, advocate passionately, and just can’t wait to vote.
2 PM-- Books & Bugs: Natural Stewardship through Bugs and Dirt!
Activism starts with the ground we stand on and the Earth we love! Join us alongside local nonprofits to learn about stewardship of the very dirt beneath our toes. The Santa Cruz Community Compost Co. will be here to teach us about their haul-by-bike composting program, and composting services within Santa Cruz county. Additional educational materials are provided by Life Lab of Santa Cruz. And, for those of you who like things that squish, slime and fly, we will have an interactive educational table on BUGS from the Seabright Museum of Natural History.
7 PM -- Literary Trivia 2018: The Return of Thomas Todd
Local triviamaster Thomas Todd returns to town for one-night only to host our annual Literary Trivia! This glorious trivia tradition is sponsored by our friends at Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing. Arrive early to get your table; pre-registered teams have priority seating on a first-come, first-serve basis.
