Bookshop's Favorite Infant Books

Floyd’s kite is stuck in a tree, what can he do to get it back down? Let’s just say he tries just about anything. In this comical tale, Oliver Jeffers humor shines through in a laugh-out-loud book perfect for little ones (and the big one’s reading out loud!) One of my favorites to sell to parents trying to find a book they won’t tire of and for any family member shopping for a new “classic.”

I love all of Britta Teckentrup’s peek-through picture books, but this one is my favorite. Her art has almost a collage quality to it that is very unique and the peek-through parts make the book more engaging for little ones. Great for teaching about the phases of the moon or simply for kids who love the night sky. If you enjoy this book, make sure to check out her other ones! —Alana

The community kitchen pulls together their latest meal with organized chaos and such good onomatopoeias! This board book adaptation moves admirably to a small format and loses none of its charm. My kids love looking at all the little details on every page and the words trip off the tongue pleasingly. A perfect cozy read sandwiched between All the World and Everywhere Babies.

My daughter thinks Crunch is just the funniest, shy dinosaur ever, but don’t talk too loud or he might hide! Can you help him say hello, paint names, and eventually fall asleep? A coaxing, interactive text paired with Pizzoli’s gentle illustrations are sure to engage any little one. This follows admirably in the footsteps of Press Here and Peck Peck Peck, both classics in our household.

Lami’s love for her chickens will liven up everyone’s storytime. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the familiar mayhem and antics in this delightful board book, with full-page spreads of colorful illustrations that are rich with family and community. Loving lessons about leaning into your own giftedness and being unapologetically “you” are themes we all need to learn, no matter how old we are.  —JENNY

With his signature tinted windows, Becker’s newest board book One Sky invites readers to hold the pages up to a sunny day and see how light plays with the colors. Atmospheric and ethereal, this read-aloud celebrates the sky in a fun and interactive way. I love books that you can engage with in multiple ways! Like Becker’s You Are Light and My Favorite Color, this one is especially great for infants because of its tactile nature. —Eli

Raul the Third makes his board book debut with this adorable bedtime story. I always look forward to what this author/illustrator comes out with, and this little book did not disappoint! Colorful, vibrant images combine with fun and easy bilingual English/Spanish storytelling as we follow along with Coco Rocho joining his friends for wonderful restful naps! Take a peek at the nighttime antics of a wide assortment of animals around the world. As you turn each page, the sliver-of-a-moon cut-out slowly, delightfully grows into a full moon, and then cycles back until it is again just a sliver. Even after you know the words by heart, it’s still remarkable to flip through the pages and watch the waxing and waning moon. One of my favorite picture books, now available as a board book for little hands to explore.  —Michelle

This cozy counting book by the great Caldecott medalist Grace Lin takes an organic approach to counting by drawing on the example of drinking hot cocoa and marshmallows with a friend. In using everyday objects to introduce mathematical concepts, Lin also gives a great lesson on sharing. It’s a perfect winter read in a new board book series by Lin on math. I just adore it! — MJ

Princess stories don’t usually spark my interest, but Princess Hair is different. The girls in it feel good about their beauty as they celebrate their braids, curls, teeny-weeny afros, twists, and frohawks. Diverse in hairstyles and skin tones, these girls like to draw and twirl, think and rock. Every kind of hair is princess hair and is worth celebrating.
